The Equine Art of artist, Donna Ridgway

For those of you who don't know or aren't sure, equine is another word for horse.  It's derived from the Latin word Equus.  So basically, equine art will be paintings and other creations with horses in them or on them.

Equine art is a little fancier term than horse art, but it means the same thing.

I've been an equine artist for 55 years.  I say that, even though in 2006 I'm 55 years old.  I can say it because I began to notice the form and shape of a horse before I could talk, before I could walk, before I was out of my mother's arms.  Ask my parents, and to their dismay, they'll tell you it was true. :)  They've never liked horses.

In my life, I turned to my greatest supporter, my Grandfather and my Grandmother.  They had a ranch and it had horses!  I spent every moment with them I could.  They bought me my first two horses.  They taught me about horses.  My Grandmother painted and my Grandfather rode them.

If I haven't lost you yet, read on and you'll see some of my equine art.

Netflix Movies

I do belong to Netflix. We like the way we can choose the movies and watch what we want. You never have late fees either! When you remember to send the movie back, you get another one. If you forget, Netflix doesn't flip out on you, they wait until you send it back. It puts you on the honor system and somehow you get the movies right out to the mail box because your best reward is to get another movie, right?

Want to see how I create equine art?

Here's a little demonstration.

This painting was created for an Equine Art Guild show called "Interpretations". Artists who are members of the guild worked from the same group of photos of two different horses. The fun was seeing what kind of paintings two or more artists would create from the same painting, although many of us chose different photos to begin our paintings.
  1. Here's the beginning of my painting. I started by drawing the horse on a gessoed masonite board. I'm using dioxadine purple to draw and my large round paint brush. I like drawing with a brush better than drawing with a pencil and I really hate transferring drawings so I just paint right on the board.
  2. After I had the basic body of the horse laid down, I drew his legs and tail and put a shadow under him.
  3. In this set of progress paintings, I began to add color and to feel the way I wanted it to flow around the horse. I wanted the texture of the paint and the color of the paint to add to the joy the horse was feeling as he made this playful leap. I also wanted you to get a sense of where he might go next.
  4. This is the finished painting. I liked the exuberance I think I captured. Doc, the horse in this painting, belongs to Juliet Harrison, an equine photographer who's a member of the Equine Art Guild.
