Equine Dentistry - Important for Horse Health and Nutrition

Are you for real?

Yes, horses need dental care too.

No, they do not get into a fun lift chair.

They don't even get a bib for drooling on.

Read on to learn the reasons why horses' teeth need attention, and what differences there may be in having an equine dentist visit versus having your local horse vet float (file) the teeth.

WHY?

Why teeth need attention.

Uneven surface wear on a horses' powerful grinding molars can lead to poorly digested food and weight loss, especially in older horses who may have not received regular dental care.

Other issues may cause discomfort or serious pain to the horse, such as a tooth coming in where the bit should rest, or a "hook" -- a jagged tooth edge that may cut or irritate the soft cheek tissue or tongue.

More than just telling their age.

What's that? No way, nuh-uh, not happening!

A commonly used tool is a long file that can reach the teeth that are far back in the horses' mouth.

Your horse may object.

You may wish to give an advance dose of a calming agent, like those commonly used to quiet a horse that is nervous about trailering. Talk to your equine dentist in advance about your concerns.

Only a licensed veterinarian can legally give your horse a strong sedative or tranquilizer. But many equine dentists can perform their job without sedation required.
