My Interest in The Eriba Caravan

It was sometime during 2002 or 2003 while on weekend break in the caravan that I first remember the Eriba Caravans catching my imagination. I had seen these quirky little vans about before but never really had an opinion on them until I seen the, then new, touring fifties model. I came away from that weekend wanting to find out more about these caravans and what exactly is there draw to some people.

By comparison these vans are small and with a pop up roof (giving them the tag pop-top caravans) not the most advisable to the taller caravaner, yet they seem to have been popular for some time and with the new model released in the early 2000's their popularity grew again. This lens is my little space dedicated to this lovely little caravan that has obviousley got a space in a lot of peoples hearts.

Brief History of The Eriba Caravan

The Eriba Caravan was designed in Germany in a collaboration between Erich Bachem, who originally ordered a caravan from The HYMER repair shop, founded in 1923 in Bad Waldseen, and Erwin Hymer, son of Alfons. The result was these two men decided to work together to produce a touring caravan that would be enjoyed by everyone.

Erich Bachem founded ERIBA, composed of the initial letters of his name, in 1957 to work as the distributor of the caravans produced at the HYMER factor and in 1958 the production, sales and distribution of these caravans started to really take of. These two companies work well together in creating a brand name for their quirky little caravan and in 1980 the companies merged to become HYMER-ERIBA GmbH. Operating as a private limited company for 10 years it was decided that HYMER-ERIBA GmbH should be made public so in December 1990 Hymer AG was founded.
