Erice, Mountain Of Beauty

Aeneas, Hercules and Venus, the goddess of love and beauty. These characters that myth has gathered around the ancient village of Erice mark the spirit of a mountain rich in history and legends. It majestically rises above Trapani, in the west corner of Sicily island. There is an old castle on the top of this mountain. At first, it was a temple dedicated to the goddess Venus. Millennia have only scratched the patina of myth.

Raise Of The Legend

Venere's castle - ericeThe mountain, called Monte San Giuliano, is a wholly isolated peak, rising in the midst of a low undulating tract, which causes its elevation to appear much more considerable than it really is, so that it was regarded in ancient as well as modern times as the most lofty summit in the whole island next to Aetna, though its real elevation does not exceed 2184 English feet Hence we find Eryx alluded to by Virgil and other Latin poets as a mountain of the first order of magnitude, and associated with Athos, Aetna, etc. On its summit stood a celebrated temple of Venus or Aphrodite, founded, according to the current legend, by Aeneas, from whence the goddess derived the surname of Venus Erycina, by which she is often mentioned by Latin writers.
Another legend, followed by Diodorus, ascribed the foundation both of the temple and city to an eponymous hero named Eryx, who was said to have received Hercules on his visit to this part of Sicily, and contended with that hero in a wrestling match, but was vanquished by him. This Eryx was a son of Aphrodite and Butes, a king of the country, and is hence repeatedly alluded to by Virgil as a brother of Aeneas, though that poet does not refer to him the foundation of the city. The legends which connected it with Aeneas and a Trojan chief named Elymus evidently pointed to what we learn from Thucydides as an historical fact, that Eryx as well as Segesta was a city of the Elymi, a Sicilian tribe, which is represented by almost all ancient writers as of Trojan descent.

City Of Aphrodite

At its foundation. Erice was the base of a cult dedicated to Potnia, a mother of nature goddess, later identified with Astarte by the Phoenician-Carthaginians, with Aphrodite by the Greeks and at last with Venus by the Romans. Here, the ierodulai used to live. Practising the art of sacred prostitution, they were beautiful priestesses meeting with pilgrims who used to go there and honour the goddess. In august they used to celebrate the feast of holy doves departure (anagogy) and that one of the return (catagogy) in which the red dove, incarnation of the goddess herself, was at its way back to the shrine.

Venus Castle

On the plan of the ancient temple dedicated to Venus, it was built a castle which still stands on the top of the mountain.

The castle of Venere in Erice

Structure of the castle was built by the Normans in the twelfth century by reusing stone materials of the former Roman shrine of which nothing remains. They created a wall with alternating recesses and protrusions that perfectly fit the shape of the rock with characteristic swallowtailed merlons, called Ghibellines. In the seventeenth century, one tower was pulled down by order of a viceroy inspector because he thought it could be possible to break into the inner fortress with firearms. In 1818-1819, after the Bourbon administration system reform, the manor's proprerty was transferred to the township. At the end of last century, in order to allow easier access to the fortress, the wall curtain was moved back leaving isolated the two surviving partially ruined towers which in 1872 were entrusted to Earl Agostino Sieri-Pepoli. He decided to restore them, to rebuild the pentagonal tower and to build the Balio garden. Beyond the stairway there is a portal with an ogival arch which is dominated (from bottom to top) from a large limestone plaque with the Habsburg eagle of Charles V, a fourteenth century mullion and a machicolation covered by large slabs of stone. Immediately to the right there are the prison rooms and beyond we reach the clearing where the ancient temple stood. To the left there are the ruins of the lord of the manor's house and the remains of a small thermal bath (caldarium), maybe Roman.

Stones And History

Around the castle lies the old town. Here it is a slideshow of medieval village's engaging pictures accompanied on a popular sicilian song, starring the famous Italian singer Laura Pausini.

I remember the cable car up to Erice, the narrow cobbled streets and views out to sea. I cannot believe my road trip around Sicily was 25 years ago. Hopefully, I will get back there soon.
