Welcome to Error Coin Collecting

Mint coins is a difficult art. The manufacturing process involves both humans and machines. Each of which can create error coins. Fortunately for the U.S. government these coin errors are atypical. Fortunately for error coin collectors, they still do occur.

Coin collectors have probably began error coin collecting as soon as coins began to be produced. Today the error coin hobby is a very expensive hobby. Coin collectors around the globe try to find rare error coins.

How US Coin Errors Occur

Coin error occur during the manufacturing of us coins. Coin errors can be caused by both human error and mechanical error. The United States Mint does everything it can to catch these error before the coins leave the US Mint, but sometimes the defective coins get into circulation.

The Philadelphia Mint and the Denver Mint produce over 40 million coins everyday. The US Mint produces over 10 coins per second. That is fast!! With this type of production volume, it is easy to see how coin errors can slip out. But, their mistake is what leads to error coin collecting.

What machines does the US Mint use to find error coins?

The US Mint uses riddling devices. These riddling devices are large sifter machines that try to sift out irregular coins. Because these machines look for differences in sizes of coins, very few oversized or mis-shapen coins enter circulation. However, despite all of the quality controls that the US Mint has in place, some error coins slip out.
