#10 Escape From Reality Book

The Legend of Aranrhod
By Geoff Anderson
The Legend of Aranrhod
Amazon Price: $32.60 (as of 02/22/2012)![]()
The Legend of Aranrhod is a roller-coaster journey of suspense, danger and deceit with an incredible climax that will leave you breathless. Plunging you straight into the middle of a nightmare from the first sentence, from the minute you open the cover and start reading, you are sucked into an amazing novel that keeps you on the edge of your seat right up to the last few pages. Welcome to the world of Carys Aranrhod Cadwaladr. This book is a successful cocktail of myth, legend, religion and magic that keeps you guessing. Throughout the book various endings are hinted at leading you to countless possibilities, but though looking back the solution is obvious, you'll never guess how it happens.
#9 Escape From Reality Book

Escaping Reality
By Geoff Nelder
Escaping Reality
Amazon Price: $4.70 (as of 02/22/2012)![]()
So who was the actual killer, the killer who framed Gerry for the jewel theft and the dead jewellery store clerk? It makes this book a 12 on a scale of 1-10, because a mystery/thriller where you don't know who the killer is by the fourth chapter, at the latest, is a hell of a twister of a mystery. Escaping Reality is more complicated than it looks at first glance. It'll keep you guessing, sometimes cringing for poor Gerry and always laughing from start to finish.
#8 Escape From Reality Book

The Subtle Knife
By Philip Pullman
The Subtle Knife, Deluxe 10th Anniversary Edition (His Dark Materials, Book 2)(Rough-cut)
Amazon Price: $9.99 (as of 02/22/2012)![]()
More than fulfilling the promise of The Golden Compass, this second volume in His Dark Materials trilogy starts off at a heart-thumping pace and never slows down. Throughout, Pullman is in absolute control of his several worlds, his plot and pace equal to his inspiration. Any number of astonishing scenes--small- and large-scale--will have readers on the edge. Truly one of the great fantasy works ever written.
Why Are Escape From Reality Books So Popular?
One of the most innovative inventions is the book. Books have expanded the memory and experience of entire civilizations. In books all the records and events are found for everyone to read. People no longer have to learn everything for themselves through experiences and exploration. When somebody discovers something and records it, no longer does another person have to make this breakthrough by his or herself. This reduces the amount of travelling and personal attainment of knowledge. People can easily be influenced by anyone with a pen and some ideas.
One example of this is the creation of the "armchair" anthropologists of the nineteenth and early twentieth century. The anthropologists would rarely venture out to understand new cultures, but would rather sit in their den and read books written by missionaries and explorers. In turn, they would write their ideas about these cultures. Some where real, but most were fiction.
Although reading a book, was once considered a highly unnatural activity, it has become a foundation for our modern society.
In respect of their entertainment value, books provide an escape from the monotonous events of everyday life. People get lost in other worlds and other people's lives, whether fictional or not. They can partake in a great noble quest without wielding a sword. These breaks in reality give people experiences that are not their own, but simply just the thoughts of a writer. All that people require to live these adventures is the ability to read and turn words into pictures and actions.
#7 Escape From Reality Book

Pride And Prejudice
By Jane Austen
Pride and Prejudice
Amazon Price: $3.00 (as of 02/22/2012)![]()
Pride and Prejudice is a powerful and romantic story about two people who grow and change because of love. An absolute must-read. Austen's brilliance as a writer is evident -- she slowly unfolds the plot one act at a time, with several intricate subplots that tie together and play off each other. She also wrote some unbelievably sharp-edged dialogue with plenty of witty banter between Lizzie and Darcy. But Austen also weaves in startlingly romantic moments between them.
#6 Escape From Reality Book

Brave New World
By Aldous Huxley
Brave New World (P.S.)
Amazon Price: $10.19 (as of 02/22/2012)![]()
Huxley uses his erudite knowledge of human relations to compare our actual world with his prophetic fantasy.. It is a frightening experience, indeed, to discover how much of his satirical prediction of a distant future became reality in so short a time. This surely is an important book. The amazing thing is, though, that even as such, it is a thrill to read. The dialogue is snappy, the narration rich, and the scenarios hilarious and frightening -- often at the same time. This is SF at its best. This is SF as literature.

#5 Escape From Reality Book

Cat's Cradle
By Kurt Vonnegut
Cat's Cradle: A Novel
Amazon Price: $5.99 (as of 02/22/2012)![]()
The thing that delighted me most about this book was the way in which it was written. Kurt Vonnegut has managed to write a powerful and memorable novel in a short, snappy style: this book has everything that makes a compelling, challenging read. Vonnegut lets you get a feel for the characters without going into lengthy descriptions, he manages to make sharp, subtle criticisms of religion, human nature and society without rambling or whining, his plot is exciting yet not unrealistic, he creates a hellish world that plays on everyone's fear of obliteration. I found this impossible to put down, and highly recommend it to any fan of literature.
#4 Escape From Reality Book

The Eye of the World
By Robert Jordan
The Eye of the World (The Wheel of Time, Book 1)
Amazon Price: $3.25 (as of 02/22/2012)![]()
Robert Jordan is able to take familiar elements and make them his own, in this powerful novel of wide and complex scope. Open religious and political conflicts add a gritty realism, while the cities and courts provide plenty of drama and splendor. Women have a stronger role in Jordan's worlds than in Tolkien's. Each character in this large cast remains distinct and their adventures are varied, and exciting. The Eye of the World stands alone as a fantasy epic.
#3 Escape From Reality Book

What If...?
By Steve N. Lee
What If...?
Amazon Price: $25.99 (as of 02/22/2012)![]()
An amazing suspense thriller. What If...? presents the reader with a question. What would humanity do if presented with the opportunity to end suffering, poverty, disease, and all the other evils of the world? Seldom do you see a work of fiction that you not only can't put down, but one that makes you think. Keeping you on the edge of your seat, it also makes you take a world that we live in and analyse where we might be heading and the consequences of getting there.

#2 Escape From Reality Book

The Lord of the Rings
By J. R. R. Tolkien
The Lord of the Rings
Amazon Price: $18.33 (as of 02/22/2012)![]()
Not just revolutionary because it was groundbreaking, the Lord of the Rings is timeless because it's the product of a truly top-shelf mind. Tolkien was a distinguished linguist and Oxford scholar of dead languages, with strong ideas about the importance of myth and story and a deep appreciation of nature. His epic recounts the Great War of the Ring and the closing of Middle-Earth's Third Age, a time when magic begins to fade from the world and men rise to dominance. Tolkien carefully details this transition with tremendous skill and love, creating in the Lord of the Rings a universal and all-embracing tale, a justly celebrated classic.
#1 Escape From Reality Book

The White Hotel
By D M Thomas
The White Hotel
Amazon Price: $8.52 (as of 02/22/2012)![]()
A dream of electrifying eroticism recounted by a young woman to her analyst, Sigmund Freud, and a horrifying yet calmly unsensational narrative of the Holocaust, this novel is now recognized as a modern classic that reconciles the nightmarish with the transcendent. Thomas spends most of the book getting you intimately involved with the heroine's life and mind. So much so, that the final impact of the book comes as an horrific shock. Give yourself time to get into the book, it is well worth it. Highly recommended. One of the greatest novels in the last 20 years.
