How I Started Teaching English as a Second Language...
and how I learn ESL TEACHING GAMES
When I first started out as an ESL teacher I didn't know any ESL teaching games, but I was quickly taught by my co-workers, chinese teachers, bosses and other foreigners in Asia how to play these games. It wasn't long before that my brain linked up ESL Teaching Games and Looking Good at Work. I would come in on Mondays and show off some new ESL Game that one of my friends had told me...and the students would be thrilled, my boss would ask me how to play it and everything great like that!
So I would ask everybody that I knew and even people that I didn't know if they knew any ESL teaching games that I could play in class. And it wasn't long before I started to take notes and compile a notebook full of ESL teaching Games.
The first job that I had I was told at the end of the semester that they wanted to find a new ESL teacher instead of me... so I left that school with six months of experience and I had learned a few more ESL teaching games.
The next school that I went to I was more experienced and I also learned even more ESL games.
As time went by I would always be a better teacher after each six month semester.
I know many teachers who have come to Asia to teach English and ended up getting fired after their first semester. A lot of them decided that they were not good at teaching English, so they went back home after only one semester.
You can't just fly to Asia and expect to be the best teacher right away. There will be a learning curve but the school that hires you will understand and they will do their best to help you improve and learn.
The longer that you teach the more things you will learn that will make you become a better teacher.
In no time at all...the problems that you had before will be gone. You will learn how to entertain the class for the whole class.
- you will be able to control the class
- learn how to keep the students happy
- learn how what works and what doesn't work
***Just remember not to give up so easily.***
ESL TEACHING GAMES TEACHER w/TWO FEMALE STUDENTS
Do you want to play some ESL Teaching Games with these two students?
As an ESL teacher anywhere in Asia...you will very easily be able to select which students you wish to tutor. You can tutor them individually, in pairs or in groups. I prefer to tutor my students individually so that I can spend extra 1 on 1 time. And after you finish your lesson, then the real ESL Teaching Games begin.....
INTRODUCTION to TEACH ENGLISH / ESL GAMES
It's hard to believe that it has been so many years since I first started Teaching English as a Second Language. At the time I started I was 23, and just beginning to discover my life's work. For many years I had been an activie seeker of fun, new ways to improve my students and make their minds more focused. So I dedicated myself to learning teaching methods, techniques and most importantly ESL Games and Activities.
By asking ESL teachers to share their ESL techniques, methods, ESL games and acitivies, and stories; and by attending every Teach English Workshop. My ESL class started to become more fun everyday. And my students' English levels started to improve much faster than the other classes. I was having fun teaching English and my students were having fun learning and speaking English.
After my classes began to improve and new students started to join my class... I thought that it might be a good idea to write the teaching methods, techniques and the ESL Games that I was using in my class into some sort of journal. As my journal became larger... other ESL Teachers asked to look at my journal, and then asked to borrow my journal. They showed it to some of their friends... and I actually never saw that journal again. And when that book disappeared... I wondered "Who am I to write a How to Teach English Journal?"
My friend Sophia helped and encourage me to keep writing in my journal. So I made a new Journal while documenting what was working for what different age groups; and what wasn't working for those age groups. And when I finally stopped worrying about others were thinking about my journal, it had grown into over 20 journals.
So... later on... with the help of my friend I self published a book on ESL Games. I published one hundred and then I gave them out to my close friends, and they shared the book with some of their co-workers/friends, etc. And through this book I met a man who had a successful English in Taiwan website. He taught me how to make websites. And since that time I have recieved over 1,000,000 views for my different Teach English / ESL Games and Activities websites.
It has been extremely satisfying to recieve so many letters telling me how much my websites have helped people with improving their students and financial situations. I am truly grateful to have given the opportunity to contribute in this way.

So it is up to the you, the ESL teacher to do test each ESL game on each class to find the ESL games that are most effective for each class.
So many times I have the parents of my students ask how can they make it more fun for their children to study at home. And I always tell them that if the ESL teacher presents the material in a fun way which encourages the student to want to learn; then they will study without feeling like it is a chore.

ESL GAME #1
This ESL Teaching Game is called, "TABOO."
Taboo means that it is something that you do not do / say.
In this case..."Taboo" means something that you don't and can't say. If you do
say the Taboo word or the Taboo related words ~ your team loses.
The ESL teacher will first divide the class into two or more teams.
The ESL teacher will call up one student from one of the teams.
That student will have to sit on a chair in front of the whiteboard
with his/her back to the board; so that he/she can't see the Taboo
words.
The teacher will then write one main word on the board, and three
other words which are related to the main word.
All of the words on the blackboard are "TABOO," and they can not
be said. Also, no actions what so ever.
The student who is sitting in front of the board will then get to listen
to his team give him clues ~ so that he can figure out what the MAIN
TABOO word is.
If that student says the main Taboo word within the time limit...that
team gets one point. Then it is the other teams turn.
ESL Teaching Games #2
ESL GAMES #2
This is a fun and easy ESL Game.
To play this ESL Game you will need a deck of cards.
First shuffle up the deck of cards.
2. Put all of the cards on a desk / table FACE DOWN.
Now divide the class into teams.
You will ask each student a question. If he/she answers
correctly, he/she can turn two cards FACE UP.
The two cards which are face up have to be visible by
everyone in the room ~ so that everyone can use their
MEMORY to find the cards later.
The way to win the game is to find the most amount of
cards that match.
IE. two two, three three, ten ten, jack jack, etc.
After the student turns over the two cards Face Up...
1. If the cards are the same number/face ~ then that
student gets to keep those cards. AND... he/she gets
one more turn.
2. If the cards do not match... then he/she must turn
the cards back Face Down. Then it will be the next
students turn.
Keep playing until all the cards are off the table.
The team with the most amount of cards is the winner
.

ESL GAME #3
HEART, GUN, BOMB! was the first ESL Game that I
ever learned. I was lucky enough to have my older
brother already working in Taiwan with his then
girlfriend; now wife.
He taught me how to play Gun, Heart, Bomb! Version 1.
Over the years...I could tell that the game was becoming
stale to me; so I made a few changes.
HOW TO PLAY GUN, HEART, BOMB! Version 2.0
Draw a big grid on the board. The bigger the better!
You will write the numbers one to ten on the top of the
grid (as in the video below). And you will write the letters
A - J in the far left boxes (as in the video below).
You will divide the class into two or more teams.
Name each team.
Write the students in each team names under their team
name.
Give each student an equal amount of hit points ( 3 - 5 is
best ).
Get every student to stand up. After they answer one question
they may have a seat. When all of the students are in their seats
you may begin the game.
Ask one student from one team which box he/she would like to pick.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Before class (during your prepartion time ~ draw
the same grid on the board on a piece of paper. You will have to fill in the
boxes with the items.)
The items that you can use are:
A gun, a heart, a bomb, a tank, a flamethrower, a helicopter and feel free
to add new items.
A gun = the player that choose that box can shoot one hit point off an opposing
players hit point.
You can also have double guns and triple guns.
A heart = the player that choose this box can give one hit point to a member of
his/her team.
You can also have double hearts and triple hearts.
A bomb = which ever student choose this box will lose a hit point, because the
bomb will explode his/her hit point.
There are also double bombs and triple bombs.
A tank = a tank can shoot one player on the opposing team and destroy three
of that players points.
A flamethrower will hit every player once on one team.
A helicopter will destroy two hit points from one team.
These helicopters are the most valuable items in the
game...so they should only be one or two in the entire
game.
The way to win the game is to be the last team with
hit points remaining.

has to answer it correctly before he/she has a turn.
If the student makes the Jenga Tower collapse ~ every other team

This is a great game to play.
All of the students love to play this game.
It is a lot of fun, and it will eat up some time at the end of
your class

Do you know how to play Tic Tac Toe?
If you don't... then I am speechless....
Everybody knows how to play Tic Tac Toe...
but did you know that you can play this game
inside the ESL classroom?
Draw big Tic Tac Toe lines on the whiteboard.
You can play this game two ways:
1. The teacher vs. the students
or
2. Team 1 vs. Team 2
Kids love this game...
and they especially love it if they
can be the almight ESL Teacher.
Sometimes it can be fun to ask the
students where they think that you
should put your X or O.
Some of the students will try to trick
you and your favorite students will
try to help you.

ESL TEACHING GAME #6
WHEEL OF FORTUNE (the ESL Game Version)
I worked at one school in the evenings after my full time job twice a week for about half a month.
I would warm up with this game for every single class.
The students love this game. It helps improve the students spelling, and it also
helps them to learn how to participate in class.
You, the teacher, will think of a word or words.
Draw little horizontal lines that represent each letter.
Divide the class into two teams.
One team will be the Red team and the
other team will be the Blue team.
If a Red team member guesses the correct
letter ~ then you will write that letter where it
should go in the same color as that student's
team color.
When the puzzle is finished... you will be able to
count how many Red letters and how many Blue
letters there are.
Write the amount of letters each team guessed.
You can keep playing this game for as long as you want.
When you decide that it is time to do something else...
add up all of the scores for each team ~ and the winning
team will be the team with the highest score!
TEACH ENGLISH OR LIVE YOUR WHOLE LIFE IN THE SAME CITY...

ESL TEACHING GAME #7
THE PIRATE BARREL
use in the ESL Classroom.
Yes...you need to buy this game from Toys R Us,
but it will be worth the ten bucks.
This game comes with approx. 52 different colored
swords. There are an equal amount of swords for
four different colors.
With the swords I will first ask all the students a question...
whoever answers the question correctly wins the sword.
Hand out all of the swords.
When the students have all of the swords ~ then you can
start to play.
The way to win this game is to make the Pirate "Jump out
of the Barrel."
Who ever makes the Pirate jump out of the barrel wins a prize
for himself/herself or for his/her team.
ESL TEACHING GAME #8
FOUR CORNERS OF MOUNT FUJI
This is an ESL Game that I learned in the last year.
When I heard how to play it... I thought that it wouldn't work.
But, it turned out that this is one of my most popular games
for almost every single class.
To play this game... first you will need to show the four corners
of the room to your students. Name each corner:
Corner 1
Corner 2
Corner 3
and Corner 4
The teacher will close his/her eyes and count to ten.
While he/she is counting the students will quietly walk
to one of the four corners.
When the teacher finishes counting to ten...he/she will
pick one corner.
If any of your ESL students are in that corner ~ they are out.
They must sit down in their seats until the next game.
Keep playing the game until their is only one student left.
That one student is the winner!

ESL TEACHERS THAT CAN PLAY

ESL TEACHING GAME #9
HEART - GUN - BOMB ( the original version )
This ESL Game is basically the same game as
Heart, Gun, Bomb! Version 2.0, but this game
has a twist to it.
Instead of the students picking a box in a giant
grid... they will draw a card from the top of the
deck. The card that they draw will reveal which
item they will get.
For you advanced ESL Teachers - you can make
up what each card represents. If you are not sure
what to do... do this:
Ace = 1 Helicopter ( A helicopter can shoot everybody on one team twice )
King = 1 Flamethrower ( A flamethrower can shoot everybody on one team once )
Queen = Triple Heart ( 1 heart = Plus one hit point for someone / Triple Heart = Plus 3 Hit points )
Jack = Triple Gun ( 1 Gun can shoot one hit point of another player / Triple Gun can shoot 3 Hit points )
Ten = Double Gun ( This item can shoot one player two times )
Nine = Single Gun ( This item can shoot one player one time)
Eight = Single Gun
Seven = Single Gun
Six = Single Heart
Five = Single Heart
Four = Bomb ( A bomb will explode and destroy 1 hit point from whoever picked this card )
Three = Double Bomb
Two = Triple Bomb

ESL TEACHING GAME #10
HEART - GUN - BOMB w/ DICE
This ESL Game is another Heart, Gun, Bomb! Game...
but this time instead of using the teacher's answer
key or using cards...
You will use Dice.
1 = A bomb ( minus one for whoever rolls this number )
2 = A heart ( plus one for whoever rolls this number )
3 = A gun ( a gun can shoot an another teams player )
4 = A flamethrower ( a flamethrower can shoot everybody on one opposing team one time)
5 = A tank ( a tank can shoot one player twice )
6 = A helicopter ( a helicopter can shoot everybody on an opposing team two times )
The game is over when only one team has remaining hit points...
that team is the winning team!

ESL TEACHING GAME #13
WHAT TIME IS IT MR. WOLF?
The students will be the "Good Guys" and you/the ESL teacher
will be the "Bad Wolf."
Alll of the students on the wall will say, "What time is it Mr. Wolf?"
The ESL Teacher will then say " It is ___ o'clock."
You can say any time from one - twelve o'clock.
Depending on what time you say - that is how many big
steps each student will have to take.
"What time is it Mr. Wolf?"
"It is 5 o'clock."
- The students MUST take five big steps closer to you.
When you feel that the students are close enough for you
to catch; when the students say, "What time is it Mr. Wolf?"
You will say, "It's lunch time." You will then quickly spin around,
open your eyes and try to catch as many students as possible.
Also, when you say that, "It's lunch time... all the students will scream
and quickly try to run back to their home wall.
If the students get back to the home wall without being caught...
they are safe.
However, if they are caught... they must become baby wolves and
help the ESL teacher try to catch other students.
99% of the foreigners that come
to Asia to teach English say,
"I am just going to stay for one
year."
- But they end up staying
for many years...
ESL TEACHING GAME #14
BINGO
This ESL Game is one of the classic games.
You will draw the large grid on the board 5 x 5.
The middle box is a free box - which means that
everybody can use it.
You will tell the students to copy the grid onto
a sheet of paper.
Tell the students to write the numbers 1 - 24
in the boxes. The students can only write each
number one time.
When all of the students are ready to start...
the ESL teacher will call out a number.
The students will then cross off that number
on their grid.
The teacher will continue to call out numbers
until one of the students is able to make a
straight line vertically, horizontally or diagonally.
The first student to make a BINGO wins the game
and you can award that student with some sort
of prize!

Keep playing this game until their is
only one student left, and that student
is the winner.
If your class is very smart, you may need
to call out the directions very fast to trick
the students.
ESL Teaching GAME 17
STICKYBALL BINGO
with your class because they love to throw the
stickyball!
The way to play this is:
Draw two large 5 X 5 squares on the board.
One large 5 X 5 square for each team.
Have the two teams make two lines. One line
for team 1 and the other line for team 2.
The way to win this game is to make a straight
line horizontally, vertically or diagnolly.
Let each team take turns throwing the stickyball
at their large Square.
If they hit an open box in the square, the teacher
will write an X in that box.
When their are five X's that make a line -
that team wins!
ESL TEACHING GAME 18
PICTIONARY
The teacher will divide the class into two teams.
Each team will write on a little piece of paper a word
that they know, and put that piece of paper into a hat.
One team will go first. One student from that team will
come up to the board, pick a word from the hat, and then
have two minutes to draw the picture on the word. If any of the
students from his/her team guess the word - they win a point.
If time runs out before any student can guess the word; then
the other team gets one guess. If that guess is right - they
win the point.
After one team has a turn. Then next time it is the other teams
turn to try.
Keep playing until you decide that it is time to do something else.
ESL Teaching Game 19
SURVEY SAYS...
you have to do is draw the grid on the board (like I have done in
the Youtube Video), on the far far left in the boxes the students
will write their friends names.
In the top boxes the students will draw/color/write a question.
Ex. If in box 1 ~ there was a picture of an apple.
The student would then go ask his/her friends, "Do you like
to eat apples?"
The friend would either say, "Yes, I do;" or "No, I don't like to
eat apples."
The first student would then write a CHECK MARK or an X,
depending on the answer of his classmate.
This student would need to ask all of his friends all of the questions
that are on his paper; he/she must also always use proper English,
and the answers must be answered using proper English as well.
ESL Teaching Game 20
FOUR IN A ROW
pieces into a vertical playing board.
This is a great Teaching Game and you can play
it in any ESL class.
The object of the game is to get four of your pieces
in a row, while blocking your opponent from doing the same.
You can play this ESL game on the whiteboard/blackboard
during class time.
ESL GAME: Four in a Row (Continuation)
We will play this game as a break from our ordinary, heavy duty learning routine...
this will enable the little students to turn their thinking caps off for a few minutes
and have some fun!
ESL Teaching Game 21
HEART - GUN - BOMB
To play this game....
divide the class into two or more teams...
after a student answers a question they can pick a box...
in the box will either be a gun, heart or bomb...
with a gun they can shoot another player, with a heart they can get themselves one more hit point, and a bomb will blow up one of their hit points...
A team wins when the other teams have no more hit points.
Enjoy teaching English overseas and remember to save some money!

ESL Teaching GAME 22
JUMBLED WORDS
and you want to "Break the Ice" with them... I would recommend
this game.
All that you (the ESL Teacher) would have to do is think of a word
in your head.
(Bird)
After you think of the word... scramble up the words in your mind and
write that scrambled word on the board:
1. DIBR (BIRD)
2. KLWA (WALK)
3. EOCFEF (COFFEE)
4. ATC (CAT)
5. NMABTA (Do you know the answer to this one????)
ESL Teaching GAME 23
SPELL-OFFS (Spelling Playoffs)
Let's say for example that you just finished a spelling test and you
want to reward your students with a fun time.
You will first make a playoff bracket (similiar to the NBA / NHL / NFL playoff
brackets ).
Then write a students name in each of the brackets.
You / The Teacher will call up the two students from one bracket.
You will call out a word for them to write on the board.
Whichever student writes the word first correctly wins.
That student will move to the next playoff bracket to face
the winner of the other brackets.
You should have half of the students name written on the left
side of the board, and the other half written on the far right side of
the board.
As you play, the winning students move on... until the two champions
from each side will face each other in the Championship round to
see who is the best speller in the class.
For the Championship round I usually do best out of 7.

Don't Let them Stop You!

This ESL Game is one of my favorite games to
play with the students. This game can be stretched
out for the entire class if you want to do that...

this article which will explain it much better.

WHAT IS EDUTAINMENT?

"EDUTAINMENT" is a form of education which is supposed to be entertaining. Edutainment is used in most ESL classes because the old way of learning has been proven to be ineffective, less fun and boring.
In most ESL classes all over Asia you are considered a good teacher if you can entertain your class.
An old school style teacher cannot and will not be able to survive teaching the old way.
Nowadays it is more important to entertain, than to teach.
So if you are a new teacher... remember to play these games and be fun. Being fun and entertaining is the single most important factor in you getting hired and keeping your job!
