Lawyers, in their heart of hearts wish they didn't even have to do this stuff. They did not go to law school to become sales people. But the reality is if they choose to go into private practice, ultimately they WILL need to find clients, and that involves delving into the euphemisms like business development, and practice development which can be translated directly into what they really are: marketing and sales. There is a part of every lawyer that remains hopeful - - if they are good "enough," people will hear about them and call them with A-level matters, transactions, cases, or deals. Field of Dreams is one of their favorite movies - - and they believe "If I build it, they will come" - - Won't they?? Lawyers don't learn about running a business in law school, and they certainly don't learn about how to attract new clients. There is a deep belief held by some that marketing is a "profession" not a business, and that it is "beneath us" as a profession to admit we want and need new clients - - just like any other business.

My mission

Corny or not, I work in this business because I want to make a difference - - One of the biggest missing links today in how lawyers market, is that they focus on themselves (their Credentials, Representations, Awards, Practice - - ok the acronym is CRAP) instead of focusing on clients and their needs. I want to help lawyers bridge the gap between their intellectual knowledge and brilliance as a lawyer, to actually finding the clients to keep them in business. I want to help lawyers figure out how to attract new clients (yes - - sell their services) based on what clients really need, not on what areas of law the lawyer wants to practice.

Every good business has a blog.

I launched this blog in January 2009 to provide substantive "how-to" sales and marketing ideas for small law firms and solo practitioners. It is linked to our new web-based tool for lawyers, www.MarketYourLawPractice.com, but as you will see, the blog focuses exclusively on substantive content relevant to building ones practice in today's challenging economy.

P.S. If you take away just one thing

it would be a desire to refocus your practice not around what you want to sell as a lawyer, but around best meerting the needs of your current and prospective clients based on the type and level of legal services they need right now - - it's about making your legal services "must have" versus "nice to have" with your clients. If you don't do this, you won't have clients!.
