The two things to know and learn about great essay writing are to:
1. Save time writing while also...
2. Writing effectively
These methods are based on what I've learned as a professional tutor working with students one-on-one and as a classroom instructor for Developmental English. While I'll outline the basic steps below, my book, The Portable Essay Tutor outlines the specific steps in more detail and includes insider tips and shortcuts to keep students ahead of the process instead of falling behind or cramming at the last minute.
The goal is to become a skillful, confident writer in the shortest time possible, unlike several other college writing textbooks that either contain too much complicated information or not enough explanation and end up being thrown in the corner somewhere to collect dust. This book is different than most others in the genre because it simplifies the process of writing a college essay dramatically, eliminating the need for excessive references and resources, textbook studying, and it does not sacrifice quality of writing. Students will learn to save time by using their time wisely.
The basic steps of the Portable Essay Tutor formula are:
1. First complete a pre-assessment to determine your learning strengths and weaknesses. This is based on Howard Gardner's theory of Multiple Intelligences, a matrix of eight distinct learning areas that help define one's greatest interests and learning styles. These can be found online, and my book lists a specific site for a comprehensive test.
2. Execute the principles of smart researching. You must be organized with your research from the beginning of the essay assignment. Know where you can find reliable information and get it fast. This is one area that can make an assignment time consuming if you are in oblivion with where to start and follow through with your research. My book contains an extensive list of reliable research sources, both online and traditional, so that you will always feel confident in getting the right information fast. I have also included sites that help with generating your thesis.
3. Begin the pre-writing process. This involves starting the seed of your essay. Since writing is a very abstract process of thought to words on paper, it is not recommended that you simply begin writing in essay format. If you do, you are also wasting time in thinking about structure as well as content. In addition, you'll probably need to heavily edit for organization later. Pre-writing will save much time in the long run of the assignment. Different methods of pre-writing are given in the book.
4. Create your outline and thesis. From the sprouted seed, begin creating the skeleton essay. This will get your content in an organized format with your research ready to be inserted and documented. In addition, you'll define the all-important thesis that is the control factor of the essay. My book contains an outline template with step-by-step guidance to help you write an effective outline that you'll later easily transfer to a rough draft.
5. Write your rough draft. It is not necessary to start from scratch here. If you have prepared your outline correctly and sufficiently, you can simply revert it to a rough draft. I show you how to do this step by step with ease in my book.
6. Revise to final copy. This is the basic editing process of refining your work until it is satisfactory to the assignment's requirements. This involves checking content, thesis, organization, research, spelling, and grammar.
The Portable Essay Tutor also contains some additional sections on how to get the most out of tutoring in college, and how this book can even help serve as a substitute, so you always have the help you need right there with you. In addition, I have written a walk-through of completing an essay assignment from start to finish, utilizing all these steps.
