Decorating A University Room Or Dorm

So you've moved out of your parents home and are finally off at university and are now stuck in a room that resembles a prison cell, this is a moment many student will know very well. University halls are made to be basic and plain and essentially just easy for the landlord or owner to keep maintained so simple basic stuff in the smallest space possible in order to fit the most amount of flats and rooms in. However with a few added extras they can look like your home away from home and a place you'll be very sad to leave at the end of the year as it's your room and your flat. As I was when I left my university first year halls this year, and won't have a chance to decorate a room off my own again until this time next year as I am commuting this year although it is nice to be in a house where all the walls aren't painted white or grey. So on with the tips.

Bedding

With not being able to paint the walls, I always liked to have cute and colourful bedding to give some colour to the room. It's also a good way of giving your plain white room a colour scheme, as normally this would go off the colour you painted the walls, so maybe in your old bedroom your walls were purple so purple accessories went well in that room. Well in my room at least I had pink bedding (yes I'm a girly girl) and so I always got pink accessories to go with that which helps to bring the room together and make it look cosy and like an actual bedroom instead of just student halls room.

Storage

A big thing about any dorm room or halls room there is never enough storage or enough room. Like I said my room didn't have any drawers, all I had were 3 shelves in the wardrobe and the small rail, and as even the guys in our flat didn't have enough room for there clothes you can tell me and the other girls definetly didn't. So the protable drawers units that you can buy are a lifesaver and I had two in my room, one of which was for university stuff and random bits and bats and the other for clothes.

Another good product are the hanging shelfs, not sure exactly how to describe them, the fabric shelfs you can buy that tie around the rail and then theres hanging boxes. Well that's a good space saver to put jeans in or shoes, as I know in my wardrobe pants and jeans take up a lot of room and they don't really need to be hung up but you don't want to put them in a drawer as then you can't see which one you want so I'd put them into different slots and stack them up so there stacked up and take up less space but you can still easily pull them out and see which one you want.

Also as well as hanging shelfs for insde the wardrobe a good space saver are over door hanging storage, for shoes and such. I know in my room I had one for my main door that had about 20 pockets for shoes, so you'd hang the clips over your door and the pockets would hang down. Very good, when you don't have much floor space and you don't want to have to put all your shoes in a box or bag, as you can still see all the shoes but there up and out of the way.

Accessories

A good thing in a plain room to add a bit of your own personality and colour are accessories. In most dorms and halls your not allowed to put anything on the wall, I know a couple of people got away with putting posters up with whitetack as they didn't leave a mark but I just never took the risk as knowing my luck I'd be the one who it would leave a mark and I'd lose my deposit for a tiny little mark on the wall. So instead I had photos in cute photo frames on my shelves and some decortive things that I'd gotten as gifts over the years. So good accessories are like I said cute photo frames, decorative statues and ornaments or little boxes to put things in. Basically things that you feel look nice and bring a bit of you into the room.
