Estate Diamond Jewelry Auctions

Antique jewelry is normally classed as jewelry that is pre 1920, while art deco, art nouveau and vintage are often grouped together and denote the era from the 1920s to the 1950s. Estate Jewelry can be from any of these eras.

Estate jewelry refers to items that have been previously worn, and may fall into the categories of either antique, vintage, or modern. Estate jewelry is jewelry acquired from the estate of another person, who can be living or deceased.

Fine Estate Diamond Jewelry

Diamonds, Diamonds, and more Diamonds!

Art nouveau jewelry was popular in the years between 1890 and 1919. Motifs used in this jewelry were inspired by nature. Butterflies, dragons, orchids, snakes and lilies were the popular motifs preferred. Widespread usage of precious and semi-precious gemstones, horn, copper shell, tortoise shell, ivory and shells was the norm.

The brief span from 1901 to 1915 is referred to as the Edwardian era. Edwardian jewelry had diamonds and pearls set in platinum, creating intricate filigree patterns.

The period from 1920 to 1935 is referred to as the Art Deco period. This also encompasses the Roaring 20s period with the Flapper donning her long necklaces and bold jewelry. It produced dazzling pieces in bright colors and straight lines. Long earrings were a popular part of Art Deco jewelry. The antique Art Deco jewelry is studded with emeralds, sapphires and rubies. These are jewels fit for a queen. Needless to say they are exorbitant and rare.

Nostalgia abounds for items from historical periods where craftsmanship seemed to be epitomized in quality versus the items crafted today. The hands of a skilled jeweler crafted these works of art, not the production line manufacturing jewelry assembly lines of today.

While the meaning of "antique" can vary depending upon the author, a current definition is, "an item which is over 100 years old and which has some added value due to rarity, historical association or other attribute".

Diamonds - Symbol and Cuts

Diamonds are the symbol of innocence and constancy.

Diamonds come in a variety of shapes and styles, and it is to these differences that the names refer. One of the most popular diamond cuts is the brilliant cut. A brilliant cut means that the diamond has a number of kite-shaped facets which face outward and catch the light, thus showing off the diamond's brilliance (hence the name, brilliant cut). Brilliant cut diamonds can even be classified further. There are round brilliant cut diamonds and princess cut brilliants. Princess cut diamonds are actually square and are one of the most popular diamond styles available today.

Two other popular diamond styles are the Emerald cut and the pear shaped diamond. The Emerald cut is a rectangular shaped gemstone with the corners cut off. This is done to protect them from getting chipped.

A pear shaped diamond is half oval shaped with the other half rising to a point, usually at the top. The look is slightly like that of a pear, hence the name.

There are various other cut and shape nuances when dealing with diamonds, but the ones listed above are the most popular.

These cuts are can be used with other gemstones as well, as seen on this beautiful Emerald cut Rose de France pendant. In fact, the Emerald cut derives its name from the Emerald gemstone.
