Estero
Estero is Spanish for "estuary", meaning where the river joins the sea. Founded in 1882 by citrus farmers, Estero is an ideally located unincorporated area in south Lee County bordered by Ft. Myers to the north and Bonita Springs to the south. The Estero River has long been acknowledged as the lifeblood of the community since Ponce de Leon discovered it in 1513 while exploring the Gulf of Mexico. Mound Key, where de Leon landed, is located at the mouth of the river where the Calusa Indians made their capital and where the first Jesuit Mission appeared in North America. The Estero River is surrounded by stands of ancient oaks and is a protected and treasured aquatic preserve.Estero is in the process of building and developing wherever you travel in the area - for instance, over 30 homes per week are being built. Development in Estero is controlled by Lee County with special amendments for area. Its residents wish to retain the old river front town feeling with intelligent and comprehensive development to include building height restriction, extensive road development, and the blending of commercial buildings with an Olde Florida or Mediterranean design.
The Estero real estate market has every type of community being built within the its boundaries, from large gated and planned communities, to smaller town centre type projects built around a self-contained lifestyle. Estero is one of the last areas to be developed in south Lee County and purchasing property here may be very fortuitous for future owners. Estero offers excellent schools, health care, and of course, year round sunshine.
