Estes Model Rocket Hobby - Fun and Educational
Estes Industries was established in 1958 in Denver, Colorado by Vernon Estes. Estes was the son of a fireworks maker. While the company manufactured and sold model rocket engines exclusively, it expanded it's offerings to model rocket kits in 1960.
After dominating the model rocket market, the company moved to Penrose, Colorado. In 1970, Estes Industries was acquired by Damon Industries.
I had my first encounter with model rockets way back in 1968. Since then, I have introduced the hobby to grandchildren, nieces and nephews. I still remember the excitement while ordering new rocket stuff and the thrill when it was delivered. Finally, there was the pure enjoyment of assembly and launch time. My favorite rocket kit had a little camera in the top cone and took aerial pictures on the way down.
Safety Notice: Adult supervision recommended for children under 12 years of age.

Estes 1469 Tandem-X Launch Set Review
Get Two For the Price of One!
Enjoy constructing the two rockets with your children. Rocket assembly and customization is half the fun of this hobby. The other half of the fun is launch-time. Plus, the entire process is packed with learning experiences.
I am prety good at putting things together, so these two rockets presented no problem. In my opinion, you will have no problems with assembly, even if you are so good at do-it-yourself stuff.
The Rockets
The E2X Amazon is the taller rocket shown in the image. It measures 33.6 inches in height. This is a plastic style rocket that reaches an altitude of up to 650 feet on standard engines.
The Amazon has a sleek, tiger-stripe body tube with pre-painted plastic nose cone and fins. It comes with a pre-assembled 18-inch parachute. Assembly time for this model is one to one and half hours for someone with no building experience.
Many rocketeers who own this model like the fact that the fin section is pre-built. Since building sturdy fins is one of the more challenging aspects of assembly, this pre-built option saves you lots of time.
The Crossfire ISX is 15.6 inches tall and is a traditional balsa wood and cardboard style rocket. It reaches a maximum altitude of 1200 feet with standard rocket engines. A pre-assembled 12-inch parachute brings it gently back to earth.
These two styles are great for getting some experience with two different rocket styles. Both come with complete assembly instructions.
Recommended engines for these two rockets... 1/2A6-2, A8-3, B4-2, B4-4, B6-2, B6-4, C6-3, C6-5
The Rocket Launch System
The Tandem-X Launch System includes a AA-battery operated Electron Beam Launch Controller which includes a safety key and 15-feet of cable. The launch pad is a Porta-Pad II that includes a 1/8" launch rod. Although not included, this pad can also support an Estes 3/16" Maxi Launch Rod.

Model Rocket Safety
Model rocketry is recommended as a participation hobby for children as young as 10 years of age. As a viewing only hobby, children as young as two years of age can enjoy watching rocket launches. Unless otherwise specified, all models require assembly. Unless they are included in a launch kit, construction tools and launch accessories are sold separately. Accessories include launch controls, launch pads, rocket engines, igniters and recovery wadding are basic necessities for all rocket launches.
