The Abraham-Hicks Scam

Is Their Spirituality Peddling Empire Crumbling?

The Abraham Hicks Scam is... Or, is it?

Twenty-five years is a long time to carry off a hoax this big, profitable and public. During their twenty-five years on the road, Esther and Jerry Hicks had to carry off their scam so well they could expand into an online storefront for related Abraham-Hicks recordings, DVDs, cards and, of course, live workshops.

Esther Hicks' claims to channel a collective of "nonphysical teachers," called Abraham, and business flourished after her cruise workshops inspired Rhonda Byrne to produce The Secret, a wildly popular independent film about intention and the 'Law of Attraction.'

After abruptly backing out of the venture with Byrne in a dispute over intellectual property (read: money), Esther and Jerry Hicks, her husband and marketing guru, stepped up their own promotion of the own Law of Attraction-oriented "teachings of Abraham," striking while the iron was hot.

Law of Attraction books, recordings and related merchandise fell into the market like a spring shower.

In the rush of excitement, Esther and Jerry Hicks even tried to make a legal trademark claim on "Law of Attraction," an effort they should have known would fail since they knew it had originally been introduced as part of the New Thought Movement, nearly a century ago, and had borrowed from the old ideas liberally. (See some revealing research on this at Abraham-Hicks Sells Used Thought.

Furious over the rejection, however, Esther and Jerry Hicks continued to market Abraham in workshops, books, card decks and recordings, but now, these "nonphysical entities" were using a new term, the clunky, but genuinely original Vortex of Attraction, keeping the Abraham Hicks scam alive while radically decreasing use of their purloined "law of attraction."

Some claim that Esther Hicks began the scam of faking her Abraham persona only after big dollar signs dulled her astonishing abilities. Others argue that the scam goes back farther and is only a variation on skills Esther and Jerry Hicks mastered during their days at Amway.

Faked or not, the Abraham Hicks Scam is faltering more recently, even temporarily canceling their newest initiative, Abraham LIVE, an unintentionally humorous title for internet video broadcasts from dead people. Abraham Hicks on Death

Flashback On When It Was About Someone Else

About wellness:

"But it does take the determination that you're going to put your thoughts upon something that does feel good. And so, here we're going to make a very bold statement: any disease could be healed in a matter of days, any disease, if distraction from it could occur and a different vibration dominate-and the healing time is about how much mix-up there is in all of that."

--- Abraham

Excerpted from the workshop in Ashland, OR on Saturday, July 20th, 2002 # 230

And death itself:

"'...death' is a matter of closing one's eyes in this dimension and literally opening one's eyes in the other dimension. And that, truly, is how all death is, no matter how it looks, up to that point.. The re-emergence into Source Energy is always a delightful thing."

--- Abraham

Excerpted from the workshop in Buffalo, NY on Tuesday, September 25th, 2001

Note: This claim, that death is always "delightful" was dished out two weeks after the World Trade Center Disaster. For pregnant women jumping to their deaths from eighty floors in the sky, for others with children waiting at home, for professionals supporting families, for the captured passengers on commercial flights, a few with infants in their laps, death was a "delightful" experience, according to Esther Hicks.

Never Been Their Practice To Push or Promote Their Products... Until They Did

Abraham Hicks Scam in Blossom

Much has been written about Esther and Jerry Hicks, including by me, and the spiritual scam they they incorporated as Abraham- Hicks, the only nonphysical entity blessed with a surname, in workshops, on cruises, in books, on DVDs, YouTube, and even on inspirational card decks. The marketing for the Abraham Hicks Scam has been over the top and certainly not consistent with the message, but that was a minor complaint. Maybe, Jerry just couldn't help himself when it came to pitching products. It was a gradual uplift into the high pitch marketing it is today.

Targeting followers who subscribe to the Abraham Hicks Quote of the Day, Esther and Jerry launched a much more aggressive pitch where, instead of a quote, they presented a 32 consecutive day promotion for guided meditation recordings they want to sell, dispensing with the expected quote entirely during that run.

Jerry Hicks is a marketing nut and has pretty much taken over the program; so easy enough to shrug off until one day the daily quote arrived with the title: "Abraham says, 'This will put you into the Vortex.'"

Now he has dead people shilling products.

Part of the marketing pitch was this quote, presumably from Esther leading up to some words from Jerry: "If you have known us for a while, you understand that it has never been our practice to push or promote our products. We have always tried to do as Abraham teaches by making them available for whoever wants them."

(Update: In a new development, the searchable Abraham quotes that brought the curious to their website and were accumulated from years of live seminars are no longer free. If you'd like to search for a phrase or a subject, your cheapest option is to pay $7.00 for a transcript, without ever being sure it's what you want. Our advice: Pay less than half that for a sturdy Starbucks and sit in silent, accelerated contemplation for a half-hour. You'll get as much wisdom and not be scammed on the way.)

The reason this matters is that whoever was responsible for the quote, not only knew it was a lie, but was also making it clear that they know better. The contradiction gives us an ironic revelation of the transparency of the Abraham Hicks Scam.

Before reading too much further, for your own reference, you might want to take a look at the Abraham-Hicks.com website and see if you find any "pushing or promoting," setting aside the thirty-two straight days of pitching their guided meditation CD's.

Note: After a tangle of technical glitches and probably declining attendance, Jerry and Esther Hicks mothballed the LIVE webcasts. At the same time, they have been canceling workshops, an unheard of act in the past, leaving only a single one left and maybe the last.

Challenging the gullibility of their followers, Abraham-Hicks marketing pitch has been ramped up in a way that manages to be unintentionally humorous as well as creepy.

After years of pitching Abraham as "deader than dead," the Abraham-Hicks marketing machine has now announced--I'm not kidding--Abraham LIVE!. Taking a tip from the monster churches in finding even more ways to generate revenue from unquestioning followers, they are now webcasting workshops, no doubt extracting subscriptions to participate.

Smart marketing.

What makes it even creepier is this. I'm quoting here:

We recently had a chat with Abraham about these upcoming global broadcasts of our live seminars, which will allow people to participate in a live event without actually being in the room. So many people, from so many places around the world, have requested that we travel to their countries so that they can participate with Abraham, and this new Live Stream broadcast answers that request. It will be a great way for people who can't be, or don't want to be, in the seminar room to still participate in the seminar.

As Abraham used the word "participate," Jerry asked, "Since the people won't be in the room and won't be raising their hands, and won't be able to sit in the hot seat to ask their question, what does Abraham mean by participate?" Abraham smiled...

Now, apart from the possible hilarity of having "a chat" with dead people, how does a nonphysical entity of approximate one-hundred spiritual teachers smile?

In spite of more than two decades of ornamentation and rigmarole, the Abraham teaching are simple ones. You can't write very many books about simple teachings, so elaborations by Jerry and Esther and others have grown the enterprise through practices that have now arrived at a convenient idea: The Vortex.

The Vortex is where all your dreams have been answered, your desires granted, and all are waiting for the perfect moment to manifest. The Vortex, in my opinion, is a clever elaboration on the Abraham-Hicks scam designed to keep up attendance up at the pricey seminars and to keep selling books, card decks, records, etc., etc., etc., based on a new angle.

The teachings, which revolve around effects of the "law of attraction" are uncomplicated, reasonable and less fantastic than some claims of conventional religions.

While we recognize five accepted senses available to humans-touch, smell, taste, sight and hearing-people making claims of advanced spiritual awareness argue that their is at least a sixth sense that has to do with emotional receptivity and is often related to the heart. Spiritual or soulful feeling is a not uncommon experience that has led people, both wise and foolish, to theorize and make claims. Although this sixth sense, call it that or something else, is widely accept as true, no one has provided a physical description about how it works, much as we understand the mechanics of sight and other senses.

Abraham-Hicks takes this a step further. They ("Abraham" represents a collective.) teach that this sixth sense is best recognized as "an emotional guidance system," much like a GPS. Our thoughts tell this sensory equipment where we want to go, just from thinking, deliberately or more likely casually, and our guidance system responds by delivering exactly the results we've requested. Since we have many thoughts and plenty of them contradict each other, our results are usually mixed. Abraham wants us to become more aware of our thoughts in combination with the feelings that accompany them and, thereby, "create our own reality" intentionally.

This is a positive thinking argument that goes back, albeit not in so much of a spiritual sense, thousands of years and was popularized commercially in Hill's Think and Grow Rich, a favorite book of Jerry Hicks' that guided him before he met Esther.

When a local pastor is found to have been stealing from the church, the crime is more profound than if an average crook did it. A crook is expected to act like one, which is why we have guards and prisons. A pastor is supposed to act like a pastor, not a crook. It's a matter of trust in both situations.

Similarly, if Jerry and Esther take Abraham in the spirit of what they teach, why would the constant marketing pitch, recently ratcheted upward in the spirit of the times, be so much a part of their public presentation? In the mailing mentioned earlier, after the disclaimer, here is what Jerry says: "I feel like I want to promote this product because I want everyone to have the opportunity to experience the wonderful things we experience with it every day. It is just so far beyond anything that we have ever experienced."

Why not just give it away, then, instead of providing a convenient link to Amazon? Put these up on iTunes as free podcasts, and let Abraham's followers download them. I guess Jerry doesn't want "everyone to have the opportunity" that much.

Abraham teaches getting into the flow of abundance, not taking action. If you create something great, folks will come to you to get it. Just make it available and widely known. This, I think, does not include violating the trust of followers who have allowed you into their daily mail to read reassuring quotes by grinding them with thirty-two straight days of manipulative pitches.

Note 1/21/2011: As Esther and Jerry Hicks turned their attention to another Vortex product promotion, exploiting a mailing list where people sign up for "Law of Attraction Quotes" to pitch a new product line, some new trends have developed. They seem to have dropped their old "allowing" and "live and let live" strategy in favor of a course in manipulation. Here are two back to back quotes sent to followers by email:

"You are the thinking, Vibrating attractor of your experience; and the thoughts you think determine everything about the life that you live. As you turn your attention toward the positive aspects of the personalities and behaviors of others with whom you share your planet, you will train your point of attraction in the direction of only what you desire. Not only does the power of your thought determine which people make their way into your life, but the power of your thought determines how they behave once they get there."
--- Abraham

"You have the power to evoke from others the relationships that you desire. But you cannot get to a new-and-improved situation by giving your attention to the current situation. The Universe, and all physical and Non-Physical players in it, is responding to the Vibrations that you are offering; and there is no distinction made between the Vibrations that you offer as you observe, and the Vibrations that you offer as you imagine. . . . If you will simply imagine your life as you want it to be, all cooperative components will be summoned. And even more important, all components that are summoned will cooperate. It is Law. The experience that you have with others is about what you evoke from them."

Who Is Jerry Hicks, the Idea Man behind the Abraham Hicks Scam?

An Obscured History Including The Upper Tiers at Amway with Wife #4

From the earliest days when I studied the Abraham-Hicks phenomenon, I was aware of a sort of awkward overcompensation from the operation regarding Jerry Hicks status. Even though Esther Hicks is the only one of the two that channels Abraham, the histories always started with Jerry's background, his inquisitive nature and, tellingly, his claim to financial success before meeting Esther. The story credited Jerry as being the "questioner of all time" who lured Abraham onto Esther's head.

Here is a bit of what their official website says about Jerry: "...by the time he met Esther, Jerry had built a multi-million-dollar business operation engaging over 100,000 people. His success springboarded almost entirely from a chance reading of Napoleon Hill's Think and Grow Rich. Jerry confides, "I was never much interested in money. I was more interested in having a wonderful life . . . and being free." There is no mention of what that "business operation" was or what those "100,000" people were engaged in.

More tellingly for me was the point made, in explaining how Abraham first took verbal hold of Esther, that the couple were driving around in Jerry's Cadillac. No mention of clothing, weather or other conversation, but his Caddy seemed important.

Their official website, seeming blissfully unaware of the humor, adds; "Jerry's life reads like a celebrity bio: circus performer, juggler, boxer, singer, gymnast, radio show host, comedian, millionaire entrepreneur. No mention of his work as a serial husband, which he was, married at least five times or, according to Jerry himself, so many times he lost count. And virtually none of the career claims, except Amway, comes with any documentation or anyone who remembers him.

In truth, Jerry's entrepreneur credentials come from work as a highly successful inspirational leader in the pyramid marketing operation, Amway, using techniques similar to those used with Esther in promoting Abraham. They obscure this as much as possible and normally limit live appearances to unquestioning head-nodders like Oprah Winfrey. Search Jerry on the web and you get either Esther or a history that leaves decades of gap material until he hooks up with Esther. If his "...life reads like a celebrity bio," how come you can't find it?

It's all wrapped into the Abraham Hicks scam.

A Little Bit of Truth Goes A Long Way

What I Think

As I have written before, I do not believe Esther Hicks could knowingly have faked channeling Abraham for decades. She and Jerry sincerely believe she is channeling Abraham, but they have always been conscious enough of the stigma to call it something else. The consistency of presentation, personality, philosophy and reliability argue against faking. What I do believe is that she is mistaking a mixture of intuition and extreme narcissism and that Jerry Hicks has always seen her abilities as a product with big time marketing possibilities.

Worth noting, too, that Esther consistently parrots Jerry Hicks worldview when doing Abraham. That is, virtually, Jerry Hicks is Abraham.

In my opinion, Abraham never announced that they would write a book with Esther by seizing control of her body. She wasn't dragged to the typewriter and forced to press keys. That was an early strategy of Jerry's to get some publishing sales to go with the seminars-also to sell at the seminars. Every book has been a digest, mainly done by Jerry, of genuine readings from Abraham Hicks workshops with his own labored spin. Eventually, someone invented such stunts as "the vortex" to avoid repeating the same simple truths and watching seminar attendance plummet.

I Survived Esther Hicks and Abrahan shirt

Shop Zazzle for another t shirt.Zazzle

It started with the law of attraction, a theory many of us found easy to accept, having seen how attitude affects results. Then, the art of allowing made sense too. Learn to manage your emotional stream. After that, it's malarkey and elaboration. In my opinion.

The Conclusion About Abraham Hicks: It's A Scam

It always has been.

Think about this. Meditation has been around forever. My cats do it. Guided meditations are not new. I bought Andrew Weil's beautiful set on CD over a decade ago and found them immensely helpful in some very tough times. The only argument for buying the Abraham-Hicks set is their claim that Abraham is somehow involved. Their pitch implies that they almost invented the concept and are not just jumping on an established sales stream.

On a personal level, I've learned a lot from listening to Esther's presentation of Abraham's teachings, even if they were all "borrowed" from another source. It can be exhilarating. My suggestion is that each of you who have gained insight from the experience send a message to the Abraham-Hicks operation in Texas and ask them to get back to trying to teach spiritual truths and put Jerry and Esther's Abraham Hicks scam back in the corner where it can eventually be forgotten.

Wow, you spent a huge amount of time and effort focusing on this "scam" -- you seem weirdly obsessed. Why? If you don't like what they are doing, just focus on something else you DO like. Get a hobby, dude.
  • DaveStone13 Apr 5, 2012 @ 1:19 pm | delete
You'd be surprised how little time I actually spend on it. The scam is fairly boring, actually, and the followers and uninteresting group without much discretion.

Why? Because readers are interested. A-H is less than 10% of what I've written about, but it catches a big proportion of readers.

Regarding your suggestions, in my experience, unsolicited advice is usually worth every penny. Yours is no exception. And, by the way, hobbies are diversions for people who don't don't have enough vital things to focus on. People like you, for example.

"Art of allowing" is actually a turn of phrase that came from me... way back in 2000 - one of their first video recorded workshops (and it's on one of their DVDS) where I am invited to the hotseat and I say, "I am a master summoner, and I want to learn the art of allowing." (or something close to that :P) Soon after, the workshops started being called Art of Allowing workshops... I guess I should trademark everything that comes out of my mouth ; >)
  • DaveStone13 Jan 20, 2012 @ 12:35 pm | delete
Damn straight, you should. But wait....

Certainly you're not suggesting that Abraham got this idea from you? The masters of the universe filched a nifty catch phrase and didn't give you credit? Why, then, you'd have to think all of their ideas came from someone else. Oh, oh, right, we already know they did, as Kyra has so smartly pointed out.
  • Kate from the UK May 30, 2012 @ 8:10 am | delete
I love people who think for themselves and your stuff is no exception! I have listened to Abraham Hicks for a while - not obsessively and I've never been to one of their workshops because I live in the UK but I have to say I don't understand why people focus so much on how much money they are making. For the cost of "Ask and it is given" and endless clips on You Tube you could have access to loads of really great stuff. If you want to attend a seminar well tickets to see any half decent entertainer cost £50 - £100 so it doesn't seem excessive. There are plenty of other people with lower profiles in this area charging far larger sums.

I personally feel sure Esther is channelling something but I don't ask anyone else to believe this - my husband, for example, believes that Jesus died to save us from our sins - personally that makes no sense whatsoever to me. However on this and other forums a few people have focused on the answer to String Theory question - on You Tube for those who want to check it out. I heard it a while ago and didn't think it was Abraham or Esther's finest hour but string theory isn't something I spend a great deal of time on so didn't worry about it. Abe was asked a question in 2004 - I searched on their website - but the tape with the answer on it would cost 60 US dollars so I didn't feel like taking it any further but if this is one of the key criticisms you have of them and you kind of make a living out of investigative journalism (nothing wrong in that) maybe you would feel like spending that on the tape and enlighten us all here. I have no idea why they charge 60 US dollars for that but then I haven't asked them - it seems excessive.

Thanks for your work .... I appreciate it even if I don't agree with you!

    Kate
