Estonia
Now a proudly independent nation again, Estonia has been subjected to Danish, Teutonic, Swedish, Russian, German, and Soviet rule. The Estonian language is related to Finnish, and they consider themselves to be a Scandinavian rather than a Baltic people.

The Singing Revolution
The Bronze Soldier
This incident puts in sharp relief the theme of this series of lenses: we just don't have the tools to deal with the remnants of empire. There has been a Russian community in Estonia since the time of the Tsars. At times, it added richly to the intellectual life of the country (as Estonians did in St. Petersburg). However, the attempted forced Russification of Estonia in the Soviet era greatly exacerbated tensions between the majority and minority communities. The incident of the Bronze Soldier illustrates just how deep those feelings still run.
