e-Sword is a fantastic electronic Bible program that many people use daily. A cool feature is the ability to create your own modules.

Even if you're not the "hacker" type, there are oodles of Bibles, commentaries, maps, and other modules that you can download. A few of these will cost you some money, but most are can be had for the download time.

Because the program author doesn't charge for the program and most of the resources (though donations are welcome), the program is used extensively by pastors, missionaries, and others all over the world. I've lost track of the number of languages that Bibles are available in. And, an enterprising individual can even create their own Bible module if the desired language Bible if needed!

I highly recommend that you take a look.

There are a ton of yahoo groups available that cover various eSword topics. Go to yahoogroups.com and search for "e-sword" and "esword".

Components to eSword

Explanations of the various components of eSword

  • eSword program:
this of course is the main engine that runs everything else. Download from the e-sword.net site. It comes bundled with the KJV Bible. Also if you don't want to download it, (it's about a 17 MB file) you can send the author a donation of $15 or more and receive the program plus a ton of the other resources which are described below.
  • Bible modules:
these end with the .bbl extension.
  • Commentaries:
These files end with the .cmt extention. Take note that when you install the program, the commentary window displays to the right of the Bible text. You can change this so it displays beneath the Bible window, as I have done.
  • Topical files:
These files end with the .top extension.

e-Sword main site
This is the e-Sword site of developer Rick Meyers. Here's what he has to say:

"e-Sword is a fast and effective way to study the Bible. e-Sword is feature rich and user friendly with more capabilities than you would expect in a free software package. The fact that e-Sword is free is just one of the blessings and does not speak of the quality of the software. I make my living writing software and I believe I have put forth my best effort in this endeavor. The real work, however, was put in by the godly men and women who devoted countless years creating the texts that have been made available for our benefit."
