Honestly, I am surprised to discover how many people promote products (and have affiliate partners) that they do not know anything about and therefore are unable to provide any personal recommendation.
That is the number one thing to strive for in your affiliate marketing business.
KNOW your partner and KNOW the product or service you are promoting.

The next step is to hand pick what they are offering.
The Barefoot Executive is a great example of this.
I first met Carrie online and discovered her work. Watched her vids, devoured her audios, and signed up for her newsletters. And Then... I asked her how I could help her.
I started the lens about her. Had it published (or nearly published)... Then I discovered that she had an affiliate program.
When you discover the product or service first, you are going to make a much better return on your affiliate efforts, simply because you are already a raving fan of the product or service.

Squidoo and Affiliate Marketing
Effective ways to maximize affiliate revenue.
Have you seen the pages that link to dozens of affiliates and are primarily banners and text links?
I am quilty of this myself. Pages online that are banners...links...just advertising actually, they are somewhat effective (if you link to them FROM value added content and label the link "VISIT our AFFILIATE Partners" or "Partner Site Map"), however if you want to really excel at your efforts and have higher returns on your affiliate associations, then you need to use other ways to get your traffic to your affiliate partner.
Squidoo is an exceptional way to do this IF you are going to follow my suggestions here. Here is what I learned by using Squidoo.com and how I have incorporated my affiliate accounts into a lens.
Create a specific topic and blend your affiliate's products into the presentation.
Think about your audience. For example: Your topic is about how to make your favorite dinner. You have included holidays that this recipe 'fits' into, you have included the recipe, the shopping list, and the table setting. Lets imagine that this is for a Dinner Party... Your affiliate mix could include:
Invitations
Decorations or Interior Design Ideas
Table settings, design, and accessories
Cooking supplies (small appliances for example)
A Movie (if your topic includes activities for the dinner party)
Candles (to set the mood)
Coffee Table Book (a conversation piece)
Photo supplies (want to take pictures at the party, store them, retrieve them, and share them)
TIP: Avoid a 'shopping list' unless your topic is a Shopping List. (this mistake I have made and the results were obvious... no recommendations/no traffic/ no affiliate commissions.
