Have You Discovered Etsy Yet? If Not, Take a Look!

Over the last couple of years, Etsy has emerged as THE SITE for selling handmade products, from fabric dolls, to ceramics, from original paintings to jewelry. The range of shops is wide--sellers range from stay-at-home moms earning some money part-time to professional artists like myself.

Etsy is a fascinating website that is evolving and growing on a daily basis. Although it has had some growing pains, it has developed into a site where you can shop for just about anything handmade and had a very supportive forum.

This lens is to support the Etsy stores of our Squidetsians. Squidetsians are Etsians who also Squidoo or maybe Squidooers that also Etsy? Lots of great creativity here. Enjoy!

Lake Erie Artists Gallery

Lake Erie Artists Gallery is the result of 8 years of work by a cooperative of local artists from Cleveland, Ohio. Everything you will find in this shop has been created by an individual artist from the Northeast Ohio area. And as you can imagine, Lake Erie plays a big role in our lives from summer fun to lake effect snow.

The Lake Erie Artists Gallery is located in historic Tower City in Downtown Cleveland, Ohio. Paula Atwell is the General Manager and can be reached via Lake Erie Artists Gallery.

Paula Atwell Jewelry

I am an artist by trade and by passion. I have been making jewelry for over 12 years and specialize in fine silver jewelry.

I started making jewelry while looking for something to engage my interests between my work at an electronic component seller, and chauffeuring my kids to school and playdates. Since I love art and jewelry, I decided to take a class in bead stringing. The rest is history, as they say.

After learning the basics, I was not happy with the types of beads that I could buy and looked for ways to make my own. I found what I was looking for in a new material called Precious Metal Clay. Since that time, I have been creating her own beads and jewelry components in fine silver PMC, and then when I am happy with them, I have them cast into fine silver.

I have an organic style to my work. All of my jewelry is made with fine silver, glass, natural stone, and sterling. Inspiration comes from the life around me, nature, and my family. Twelve years ago, I would never have thought that the hobby I started would have taken me this far, but it has and I is really enjoying the ride.

Feather Heart Creations

My name is Nina I'm 26 years old and live in TX with my many birds and other exotic pets (oh and my husband, does that count as a pet). I've been doing fantasy style art for as long as I can remember. I started selling my art and sculptures professionally at renaissance fairs and art fairs at the age of 15. Today I sell mostly online, items like OOAK (one-of-a-kind) sculptures, needle felted plush, artist bears and ATC/ACEO or art trading cards. I studied art at the San Francisco Art Academy before returning to Texas. I enjoy doing custom OOAK, one-of-a-kind art dolls, dragons, custom needle felted animals, and artist bears.

Quit Your Day Job: StephanieFizer

Stephanie of StephanieFizer quit her day job back in 2006 to become a full time artist, but it didn't quite work out according to plan. She found that she wasn't truly following her heart (or game plan) with painting, and she eventually found herself back in a day job. The second time around, she had a plan and started painting what she wanted, rather than what she thought other people would buy. Since her second Etsy launch in May of 2007, she has been happily and successfully supporting herself and loves the freedom of being her own boss.

Zen Breeze Art Gallery

I am a fulltime artist and have been painting most of my life. I did my first oil painting when I was 12. Although mostly self taught, I have an A.A. Degree in Fine Arts from West Valley College in Saratoga, California. I am a second-generation artist. My father, Walter Sears Milnor (1936-2001), concentrated on painting large canvases of the California missions.

Working in both traditional and visionary styles, my primary theme is to express the spirit or spirituality in Nature.
I am a native Californian and my greatest inspiration comes from the beautiful natural landscape of the San Francisco Bay Area.
One of my favorite themes to work with is the Contemporary Zen series, which explores botanical themes in a modern Asian style, such as autumn leaves, cherry blossoms, and so on.
In addition to painting, I also offer my handmade art jewelry. Each piece is one of a kind.

Purr Prints

I love cats and ink, and I never agreed with the idea that all cat artwork must look like mass-produced cracker-barrel-style kitchiness. I use a combination of hand-drawn, digital, and print techniques to produce my range of work; I also create cat-free artwork, viewable in the "art without cats" section of the store (but shh, don't tell my kitties I'm not always drawing them).

Though etsy is my main love (I adore handmade!), I do have shops at cafepress and zazzle as well to sell items I simply can't make yet on my own. You can visit those by going to http://cafepress.com/purrprints and http://zazzle.com/purrprints

I'm also an eager blogger who always drops back in on commenters and EntreCard droppers; you can see my musings on cats, art, crafts, and occasional random asides at http://purrprints.blogspot.com.

Aquariann

Kristin lives near the sea, and has rarely been too far from its glittering waters. She was born in California at some ungodly hour in the morning on February 8th, 1982 - which makes her an Aquarius completely and utterly. Her parents moved several times before she was old enough to really remember - they just kept traveling east until they ran into the ocean again. She has been living on the east coast ever since. Although she grew up in Bethany Beach, Delaware, she attended Flagler College in St. Augustine, Florida, and currently resides in Milton, Delaware.

Even though she majored in graphic design which principles certainly contribute to her art, she's a mostly self-taught artist. Messy mediums such as paint and charcoal have never been very nice to her, but the smooth glide of colored pencils is magic.

Although her fantasy prints are professionally printed by deviantArt, she scans all her own original artwork and makes each bookmark, magnet, sticker, and card with the help of her computer, Nightcrawler, and his trusty crew of inanimate helpers.

Stitch 'N Bitch: The Knitter's Handbook

Amazon Price: $10.04 (as of 12/05/2009)Buy Now
List Price: $13.95

"The percentage of women under forty-five who knit or crochet has doubled since 1996," says Stoller (The BUST Guide to the New Girl Order), co-founder of the Stitch 'n Bitch circle in New York, and this slightly offensive, sassy guide-which could easily have been subtitled 'The Bad Girls' Guide to Knitting'-will undoubtedly appeal to this new generation of knitters. Starting with the basics, Stoller explains how to cast on, knit, purl, and bind off, all the steps needed to make a simple Ribbed-for-Her-Pleasure Scarf or a pair of Pippi Kneestockings. Easy-to-decipher diagrams and droll section headings ("Knit Happens," "Oops, I Knit It Again") ease readers through these first steps and will give most the confidence to tackle larger projects-like Cricket's Technicolor Cozy or Meema's Felted Marsupial Tote-designed by Stitch 'n Bitchers in Stoller's group and other knitters she admires. What makes this guide exceptional, however, is its chapter on the "Wonderful World of Knitters," which details how to start your own Stitch 'n Bitch circle and plug into the virtual knitting communities on the Web. Informative, colorful and full of attitude, this book is the perfect primer for 20- and 30-somethings looking to take on this hip "new" hobby.

S K Naturals

I have always loved to sew - started when I was in the 4th grade. I used to make clothes, then window treatments and various other household goods, but after having a few babies, I discovered the love of making baby items, especially with organic materials. I hope you enjoy them!

WHY CHOOSE ORGANIC COTTON?

* No worry of toxins - Cotton is grown without the use of herbicides, pesticides and insecticides. Conventionally grown cotton consumes approximately 25% of the insecticides and more than 10% of the pesticides used in the world.

* Organic cotton is grown using untreated, non-GMO seeds. Most conventional seeds are treated with fungicides or insecticides.

* Growing organic cotton helps preserve the environment's air, water and soil. Strong soil is built through crop rotation - it retains water better due to increased organic material in the soil. The water is cleaner due to the lack of chemical run-off from fields.

* Organic cotton is harvested with help from the seasonal freeze. Conventional cotton is defoliated with toxic chemicals.

* Plus, the fabric just feels great!

So choose organic and feel great about what you are doing for your family and the world.

Thyme 2 Dream

A BIT OF A BIO

So I was signing up for Stylehive the other day, and trying to figure out how to fit myself, (ie: gypsy starchild jesusgirl pagan friendly hippie chick celtophile princess) into the "fashionable" hive world. It just wasn't working. Then I remembered the little one line description I came up with when someone asked me to describe what I do for a living: "I create jewelry for discerning Faerys & Elven Folk and have recently discovered that mortals like it too." And suddenly I had it:

I'm a Fae Elven Fashionista

Unique Handmade Books

Amazon Price: (as of 12/05/2009)Buy Now
List Price: $17.95

Most people visualize a book as the standard set of text-laden pages bound between two covers. But this traditional format is simply one of the nearly infinite possibilities once an artist gets ahold of the concept, as Alisa Golden ably demonstrates in Unique Handmade Books. Against the backdrop of her own work as well as the contributions of 13 other book artists, Golden explores various approaches to creating one-of-a-kind handmade "books."
Dozens of project instructions teach you how to make assorted book forms, including accordion-fold constructions, pocket pages, simple binding methods, and more unusual forms such as tunnel books (layered boxed scenes resembling dioramas) or Jacob's ladder books. You'll also learn less tangible skills such as how to find ideas, play with design concepts, and make a collaborative book. Since these creations are often more like mixed-media sculpture than volumes to be read, the projects serve more as a general guide for exploring our own creativity than making exact duplicates of Golden's offerings. Experienced crafters, and even very adventurous beginners, will find a wealth of inspiration here. --Amy Handy --

Kierabel

After the birth of my daughter, I couldn't find a Mother's bracelet funky enough to suit me - so I decided to make my own. I was quickly hooked! My friends all loved my design and soon they had their own bracelets as gifts. Then we all had our second babies, and a new round of bracelets came out - and this time I included nursing necklaces. My need to bead only increased as I had to distract myself from the pain of nerve damage that was complicated by the birth of my two kids, and I couldn't return to regular work. Kierabel Designs was born and named after the first, best things I had a chance to design and co-produce. My kids!

Ballet Painter Boutique

My shop carries Original Art to celebrate the beauty of ballet! I am a painter of people, and particularly ballet dancers. There are endless possibilities as to how the beauty of a dancer can be expressed in art. My paintings come from hours of watching dancers in class and at rehearsal. I love posing dancers in dramatic light, and even putting them in fantastical scenes to convey the spirit of their dance.

Three Fates Design

Three Fates Design has long been a dream of mine, but has only been able to become a reality within the last year.

Growing up in a household of artists, I struggled to find my medium, my passion. I tried everything, and then tried it again. Then early on in high school, my mother (who is an exceptional artist) bought me some beads and some string. I was immediately hooked. I wanted more and more beads. I wanted to push my designs further and further. I soon began stitching, not just stringing the beads.

Then college came and my passion was put on hold. I rarely had enough free time between classes, let alone enough money to buy supplies. Finally, I graduated with my degree in Biology, but then real life set in and it was time for a job. And let me tell you, research takes a lot out of you. I finally had the money to afford supplies, but still had no free time to bead. My beads were pushed further back on the burner.

But recently I accepted a job with a medical college. This position finally gave me the free time at home I so desperately needed. So after years of "you should really sell this stuff" comments, and some encouragement from my loving boyfriend, I have finally started hawking my wears.

I take great pride in the work I do. If you see anything you like, but would like it in a different color or maybe have a great idea of your own, let me know. I'd be more then happy to make something completly unique for you.

All products are made in a smoke free environment.
