Etta James

Etta James is an American blues, soul, R&B, and jazz singer and songwriter.

Etta James's musical style has changed during the course of her career. When beginning her recording career in the mid-50s, Etta James was marketed as an R&B and doo wop singer. After signing with Chess Records in 1960, James broke through as a traditional pop-styled singer, covering jazz and pop music standards on her debut album, At Last. Etta James's voice has deepened and coarsened in the past ten years, moving her musical style in these later years into the genres of soul and jazz.

Etta James was one of the greatest blues, jazz and soul singers of the 50s and 60s. At the age of 17 she made her breakthrough when "The Wallflower" topped the R&B chart. She had more success after signing to Chess Records: "All I Could Do Was Cry" was a minor hit, before "At Last" reached No.2 on the R&B chart and No.22 in the pop chart. It went on to become her signature tune and has been covered by many of the greatest soul and jazz singers, including Stevie Wonder, Nat King Cole and Ella Fitzgerald. More R&B hits followed, such as "Trust in Me", "Something's Got a Hold on Me" and "Stop the Wedding". In 1967, "Tell Mama" was a crossover success (reaching No.23 in the pop charts), and "Security" also did well.

In 2003, Etta James received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and was given a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. She released a new album, All the Way, in 2006.

I discovered Etta James when I was a teenaged black girl growing up in Berkeley, California. I was too young for Muddy Waters, and Billie Holiday. Before I was born,my parents fled segregated New Orleans for the wartime jobs of Oakland and San Francisco naval bases. I heard blues in the background of my life. From my aunt's honky-tonk piano playing to the sexual innuendo of Big Mama Thorton. I took it all in. This album captures every single bit of the innuendo of my life, either real or imagined.

I love the songs everyone loves, At Last, A Sunday Kind of Love, Fool That am I, Trust in Me, All I Could Do is Cry. These songs speak truth to a woman's powerlessness. What I noticed after playing this album over, and over, and over is that she sounds like a horn, a sassy, jazzy blues horn. When she goes wanh, wanh, wanh, in Jimmy Reed's, Baby, What you Want Me to Do, she is the perfect vocal instrument. Anyone who wants to meet Etta, must have this cd. I have the two cd box set and other "essential" cds, but this is simply THE BEST! --- jazzy, Washington, D.C., District of Columbia USA

20th Century Masters: The Best Of Etta James (Millennium Collection)

Original Etta James recording remastered

Few vocalists can muster the power and sass of Etta James when she's rocking the mike on classic R&B tunes like "Tell Mama" or "Something's Got a Hold on Me." But James also had a way with a ballad, and her sensitive readings of songs such as "At Last" and "All I Could Do Was Cry" made her a fan favorite in the early '60s. Had she not been sidelined for a while by an addiction to heroin, today we might think of James, not Aretha, as the Queen of Soul.
