Eureka Equinox 6 Product Features
A huge variety of styles and sizes of tents can make it challenging to choose the right one for your camping trips. So let's take a look at the Eureka Equinox 6 and see what makes it such a popular tent.To start, the hexagonal dome shape provides a good amount of space inside: 87 square feet actually, with room to sleep up to 6. Don't have 6 people on your camping trip? Then you will have the "luxury" of spreading out inside the tent, with room for all kinds of supplies and gear. And at a center height of 79 inches, there is lots of space for even a tall person to stand straight up in it.
What about set up? The design makes it fairly simple with an aluminum umbrella frame that can be set up quickly and easily.
For me, having a tent that is going to keep me...and my gear...dry is critical, and it is here that the Eureka Equinox 6 really shines. The heavy duty oxford nylon floor does a great job of repelling water, and even the design of the windows help keep things dry, as they are hooded to protect against the rain. Plus, there is the Eureka Stormshield polyester fly that provides additional full coverage while improving durability and resistance to UV, acid rain, and tearing.
One thing that I particularly like is that, in addition to the windows and door, there is a roof vent that closes, as well as breathable nylon roof and walls that actually help to lessen condensation. Kind of a nice feature if it is damp, or you want to set it up at the beach.
All in all, the Eureka Equinox 6 is a pretty nice tent, and it may very well be what you are looking for.
Eureka Equinox 6: What Do Others Think About It?
Before making a purchase, I always like to read reviews of the product. Here are a few reviews of the Eureka Equinox 6. I have owned this tent for only two years, but I camp about 4 weeks a year. I decided to write this review after camping this weekend in one of the worst storms I have ever seen that included 4 inches of rain, damaging wind, lightening and hail. The tent never flooded (though the floor had sporadic wet spots)and handled these conditions better than anything I have had previously. My favorite part of this tent, believe it or not, is how I can clean it. If you put it together on your lawn (not concrete or a driveway) and don't stake it down, you can gently "roll" it over to its side and clean the bottom of the tent! When done, roll it back and all the water drains out. I don't normally clean my tents with so much water and effort, but this last storm left it covered in mud. If you camp with any degree of regularity, you'll learn to appreciate the quality and reliability of this one.
I've had this tent for about 5 years now, having used it camping in the Bighorn Mountains of Wyoming, northern Minnesota, and on a 7,000 mile, 3 week camping tour of the eastern U.S. about 8 weeks in total, and it has really held up well. Setup was a bit tricky at first, partly from the weak instructions and partly from being a different design than I'd had before. But as my daughter and I travelled on the 3 week trip we got good at setup, taking less than 10 minutes including rainfly and staking out. The thing that has really sold me on the tent, though, was the way it handled a horrible rain storm on that trip. The wind blew probably 40-50mph and rain just pelted the tent for most of the night, and yet the tent remained standing, and more remarkably - dry! We probably should have spent the night in the car but would have gotten soaked just running between the tent and car. The tent is nice and roomy, great for car camping. Plus if there's just a couple of people you have room for a small table, folding chairs and a cooler -- really nice when it's raining or the mosquitos are bad. The oxford floor is heavy duty, much more so than most tents, ventilation is good and it's tall enough to walk around in. This is a GREAT tent!
My wife and I have had this tent since the 90's for car camping. Many of my friends have Eureka backpacking tents and I was always impressed with Eureka's toughness and water proofing. While we like to backpack, for car camping, the Equinox 6 has been a fantastic tent. Its huge! Since its only my wife and I, we load the tent with two cots, a 4 foot table and have lots of living room. It holds up to the rain in the Great Smoky Mountains and that is impressive in the Spring. While easier to put up with two, I can put this tent up alone in 15 minutes. Getting the rain fly on alone is a little tougher as the tent is so big, but with practice, its not hard either. If you have a family or just want a large tent for car camping, you will not be disappointed with this tent. I could not believe the one review that said the material ripped and the "top spider" was breaking. All outdoorsmen know you have to take care of your gear, but I can not imaging what this person did to their tent to have this happen. After 18 years, we have no rips, no breaks on the "top spider" and no disappointments with it. As with all nylon tents, if you pack it up wet in the field, when you get home, immediately pitch the entire tent in you back yard on the next sunny, or dry windy day, and let it completely dry out. If you do this, the Eureka Equinox 6 will last you for decades! (it has us!)
