Ranked #4,760 in Culture & Society, #101,529 overall
Who was Euripides?
Euripides was one of the three great tragic poets of ancient Greece. Euripides wrote nearly 90 plays, of which 18 survive today.
The tragedies of Euripides present the most subtle analysis of human psychology of the three Greek dramatists. Sophocles is quoted as saying that he portrayed people as they ought to be, whereas Euripides portrayed them as they are.
His work influenced New Comedy and Roman drama then later English and German drama. It especially inspired 17th-century French dramatic poets Pierre Corneille and Jean Baptiste Racine. His influence on drama reaches modern times.
