I Share My Experience with the ECC Medical Transcription Program
This is a review of my distance education experience with this program which I graduated from in 2005.
The Curriculum
This curriculum includes keyboarding, medical terminology, pharmacology, anatomy, editing and proofreading for the MT and other subjects relevant to the field.
The subjects build upon each other and there is ample practice transcribing real world medical reports. In fact, many of the reports in school were more difficult than those I worked on the first year of my employment.
The Delivery
The program is delivered completely online in "quarters." Full time is 3 quarters and 42 credit hours. The classes are just like any other college courses where you have homework that needs to be turned in weekly. Therefore, the program is not self paced. However, since it is online, you can sign in when you want which is wonderful for the busy adult student. My Experience
Overall, I had a very positive education experience with Everett. The distance education aspect was not an obstacle at all. I actually received more personal attention from the instructors than I did in an on-campus setting at a local community college just a year before.
The instructors were knowledgeable in their field and very quick to answer emails and questions posted in the student forums.
I feel that the curriculum thoroughly prepared me for entry level employment in the field. There was some instruction on preparing a resume and taking the online tests with MT companies. Near the end of the course I started to apply at different companies and had a job before I graduated. I am with that company now three years later.
The school also had contacts with employers that offered apprenticeship to new graduates. I didn't accept this because I had found employment, but other students did and seemed happy with their choice.
The college itself handled my application and financial aid smoothly. There was a period when it seemed down to the wire whether or not I had been accepted for financial aid. I found out that I was eligible at the last minute. But anyone I speak to about this subject seems to have had the same experience, so maybe it is just a college issue across the board.
All in all, I was very happy that I chose Everett and highly recommend their medical transcription certificate program for those considering entering the field.
