Evelyn Saenz: Lensography of a Teacher

Ranked #239 in Education, #6,192 overall

Evelyn Saenz shares Learning Resources for Homeschooling and Classroom Teachers

My passion is teaching and finding ways to teach children in fun, hands-on, creative ways. The unit studies I make on Squidoo reflect my view that learning should be integrated and no skills should be taught in isolation.

I believe that each topic studied needs to be looked at through multi-sensory activities and should draw children into the excitement of learning.

Unit studies provide the format for integrating all areas of the curriculum with a focus on a particular topic of interest to the children. Come explore the unit studies offered here. Each unit study is filed with dozens of fun, hands-on activities that will have your children happily learning all day long:

Hopping around the Unit Study Themes

Evelyn's Lensography of Homeschooling Unit Studies and Classroom Themes

As a teacher I like to organize things according to traditional subject areas. But within each article you will find hands-on learning ideas and activities that integrate all the subjects.

As both a teacher and a homeschooling mom I like to help children see connections between each subject we study.

Cats both Big and Little

Here are a few other unit studies I have written about cats. Kitty Talk explore the ways that humans can learn to communicate with their pet cats.

The Awesome Pawsome teaches us about programs in zoos designed to increase populations of tigers to prevent extinction of the species. It is hoped that by increasing awareness of the problem, funds will become available to purchase land and reintroduce tigers into the wild. In the meantime zoos are trying to maintain and improve the gene pool for tigers.

Salsa for Kittens and Puppies is a story written and read for children in digital format about the music and dance that came out of Spanish Harlem. Using cute kitten and puppy characters to represent the greats of that genera such as Tito Puente, Celia Cruz and others.

Mountain Lions had been killed and died out east of the Rockies but are beginning to reintroduced. The unit study on Mountain Lions explores all aspects of Mountain Lions from growth and development to fictional tales of this big cats to the fears that humans have of large predators. Are those fears justified? Activities include observation of domestic cats, math games and much more...

Evelyn's Thoughts on Schools and Education

Illustration of children in schoolroom by Clara M. Burd
Children in a Schoolroom
by Clara M. Burd

What do you think of the changes taking place in public education? Do you think that tests can replace teaching? Should recess be eliminated in favor of more time for testing and teaching to the test? Should children wear uniforms? Should all children be taught the same think in the same way or should children be taught as individuals catering to their strengths and interests? Should children be bribed? Should candy be used as bribes? Could children be taught how to behave rather than punished for misbehavior? Would children actually learn more by unschooling?

unschoolingJohn Holt: Unschooling

Unschooling is learning based on the student's interests, needs, and goals. Parents are facilitators rather than teachers, helping their children to find resources for learning rather than being teaching a canned curriculum.
