Types of Events
To determine what sort of activities to incorporate into your event, you must first understand what sort of your event it falls under. Events will fall into 3 broad categories; namely social events, corporate events or charity events.
The 3 different categories of events will entail different sort of entertainment:
Social events are usually informal in nature and therefore there are more flexibility in terms of the types of entertainment and activities that can be incorporated, although you will need to be more sensitive when families are involved.
For Corporate events however, you will need to ensure that the entertainment is appropriate.
For Charity events, you need to strike a balance between being too extravagant and ensuring that the attendees feel that the event was value for money.
Why are you organising the Event
Firstly, you need to be very clear about why you are having this event. Is it a social event, a charity event or a corporate event?
This will help set the tone for your goals. Setting goals are very important. Some organizers ignore this step especially when they are organizing an informal event such as a company dinner or school camp. However, every event, big or small, should have a goal. This is to ensure that there is a measure on how well you have done as an event organiser / planner.
What is so special about your event?
Next, you will also need to determine what is so special of the event. What would drag your attendees out of bed at 7am to attend your event?
You can have one key benefit followed by a series of smaller benefits For example, if you are launching a new mobile phone, your main/primary benefit could be for the attendees to discover the latest technology in mobile phone technology available only on your mobile phone. The secondary benefit could be to network and hobnob with key industry players, to get a special discount off the new range of mobile phones, etc.
Understanding the selling point of your event will come in useful when deciding how to market your event.
