Horseback Riding

Ranked #21,627 in Sports & Recreation, #520,626 overall | Donates to Earthjustice, Critter Connection

Discover the sport of horseback riding - it's a sport, trust me!

For everyone who is tired of hearing "horseback riding is not a sport", or for those misguided ducklings who still believe it to be true (and so we know have never ridden a horse... when was the last time you saw a duckling on horseback?). Learn about the real world of horseback riding. I've been riding for my whole life and have done it professionally and as a hobby. So come share your experiences. Find valuable resources. Buy new equipment or swap your old tack. Learn what the different disciplines are, learn how to get started or learn more tips and hints to take you to the next level. Maybe you want to try a new discipline. Maybe you are an Advanced level eventer looking for a groom. Maybe you are a horse crazy 12 year old whose parents said they'd buy you a horse if you figured out how to care for it. Whoever you are, I hope to provide you with the be-all, end-all of horse resources!

Getting started - Joining Pony Club

Find some helpful links and hints if you're new to riding or to horses

Horseback riding is a sport. But not only do you have to maintain yourself and your horse as you would any other athlete, you need to prepare to care for a horse as you would any other pet. Except this pet is 15x the weight of your dog and about 15x the cost! The first thing you'll need to is learn about horsemanship and caring for your horse.

If you're young (or if you're a parent getting your child into horseback riding), consider joining a chapter of the United States Pony Club. Check out www.ponyclub.org/ Pony Club teaches great mounted skills (Pony Club is geared toward English riding, so you'll learn dressage, jumping, cross country, and even polocrosse, gymkhana/mounted games!), but is really valuable for teaching basic veterinary care, every day horsemanship, safety, and conventions in horse management.

You don't even need your own horse to join, as many clubs can provide lesson horses or team you up with another horse and rider pair to share riding and responsibilities. Meetings are on weekends with the option of attending competitions (in Dressage, Jumping, Eventing, Games, Polocrosse, and even Quiz - an unmounted competition where kids get points for answering questions about riding and horse care) as well as Ratings (there are 7 ratings or levels that a member can achieve ranging from brand new beginner to near expert level). Check out the website for more info, but I can assure you that Pony Club is a great way to learn everything you need to know about horses and horse care.

English Saddles

My choices for dressage, jumping, or all-purpose saddles at various prices

Especially when riding is such an expensive past time (with the vet bills, the farrier bills, the high cost of hay... I could go on, but you don't want me to otherwise you'll never want to buy anything!), it's important to maximize your budget. Ebay is a great option for finding new, lightly used, or used-but-cheap saddles. Even very high end saddles can be found for cheap on E-bay! Brands I like are Smith Worthington (my first dressage saddle! It was cheap but served me well), Courbette, Passier (a little more $$) and Stubben (a little more uncomfortable on the rider's bum!)
