Coastal Events and Festivals in the South East
Ranked #9,879 in Travel & Places, #252,188 overall
So Many Festivals... Too Little Time!
We all know that there is bound to be a festival, event, celebration (you name it) going on in any coastal town during any given weekend during the Spring and Summer seasons, but it is WAY too difficult to find out the details. I have started a compilation of popular annual street festivals, beach events, and other celebrations happening in the South East to help ease the frustration of not feeling fully informed.
Most of the festivals I will be focusing on take place annually along the South Eastern coast, mostly in South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. If there is a festival you know of and want to learn more about (or just show off what you know about it), feel free to comment on anything and leave me some recommendations or testimonials!

St. Patties Day on the Beach
Many ways (and places) to discover your Irish roots...
Everyone is Irish on St. Patty's day, so start your celebration off by attending the St. Patrick's Day 2012 Parade in North Myrtle Beach! Known for being the biggest parade on the Grand Strand, the 2012 parade will being at 9 AM sharp On Main Street! Put on your favorite green attire and get to Main Street by 8:30 AM to ensure you get a good spot to see over 100 parade entries!
The celebration in North Myrtle Beach doesn't end with the parade. Afterward, visit the St. Patrick's Day festival at the end of Main Street and browse over 125 vendors displaying local arts and crafts! The festival also features food vendors and live entertainment. The main street festival also has a kid zone, so your little ones can take part in the celebration of all things Irish as well!
Heading South to Myrtle Beach, check out Plyler Park downtown for yet another St. Patrick's Day 2012 celebration! This celebration is right on Ocean Boulevard and will feature all kinds of St. Patty's Day Fun. There will be traditional Irish food and drink, along with awesome live performances including Rusted Root! The Plyler Park St. Patrick's Day 2012 celebration will also offer "kid friendly" zones, including an alcohol free zone and a large area with inflatable games.
Along with the awesome North Myrtle Beach Parade and the festival in Myrtle Beach, the grand strand area is home to hundreds of bars and restaurants, many of which throw their own St. Patrick's Day parties! Finn McCools in North Myrtle Beach is known for throwing a great all day St. Patrick's day event, and many restaurants and clubs in at Broadway at the Beach run specials as well! If you're on the south end of the strand, O'Keefe's Irish Pub boasts the "largest celebration in Murrells Inlet".
Myrtle Beach is known as one of the most fun places to visit on the East Coast, and St. Patrick's day is no exception! Make your St. Patty's Day 2012 a Saturday to remember!
If you're searching for Myrtle Beach hotels to relax and re-charge in during your St. Patricks Day celebration, there are many hotels along the strip in North Myrtle, Downtown, and South Myrtle!
Planning on traveling a little deeper into the south in search for some green sand and beer (not mixed together)? Savannah, GA is (and has been for a long time) a destination for St. Patties day fun. This year marks the 188th annual St. Patrick's Day in Savannah, and the festivities aren't only on March 17th!
Irish celebrations start on March 4th at 2:45 PM at the Savannah Civic Center, with the Grand Marshal Public Investiture. Then things get a little more exciting... The St. Patrick's Day Rugby Tournament starts on March 11th and goes until the 13th at Daffin Park! If you aren't exactly into the roughness of Rugby, Tara Feis will be at Emmet Park on March 10th, and the Celtic Cross Mass and Ceremony will be taking place on March 11th.
On the eve of St. Patrick's Day (March 16th) The Jasper Green Ceremony will be taking place at Madison Square at 5 PM. Then, finally as we reach St. Patrick's Day on March 17th, start your day out on a light note, St. Patrick's Day Mass at The Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist begins at 8 AM! Immediately following mass, the parade will begin at 10:30 AM.
If you are new to the Savannah scene, there are a few things that will be helpful to know and understand while visiting.
The "hot spots" or areas you want to float around and visit are Reynolds Square and anywhere surrounding in the downtown area. A lot of people know that Savannah has no "open intox law" but many don't know exactly what this means. This means that you can in fact consume alcohol on public sidewalks, but it must be contained in plastic (no one wants to be around broken glass). Also, you must be within the downtown limits to consume alcohol publicly... or you WILL be ticketed and possibly taken to the drunk tank for public intoxication.
Be safe, don't drive, and stay in one of the many downtown hotels in Savannah. Go ahead... flaunt that green. St. Patrick sure knew how to party!
