Cheap Things To Do With A Group In Houston
Events In Hermann Park
Don't you just love having to find cheap things to do with a group of folks who are coming over on the weekend,. If you're like me and come from a big family. The pressure is always on you because everybody wants you to plan a weekend outing/good time, for them?If you are in this dire strait , or you've got a bunch of school-age kids to entertain, I've got a tip or two on having a fun group outing on the cheap, in Houston, Texas.
Now, when comes to transporting all those folks, you're on your own. I tell me friends and family to meet me wherever we're going and whoever shows up gets to party and those that can't make it, holla.
Barring a rainy weekend, the cheapest place to take your crew is a park. Herman Park is one of the easiest to access from anywhere in Houston. You know how to get there right?
If you've forgot or don't never been there, it's that park that's next door to the zoo in the Texas Medial Center. The place that has a big statue of Sam Houston sitting on his horse.
It's my favorite because there is so much to do in and around the park.
Visit the Children's museum
Check out the Rose Garden
Ride paddle boats on the lake.
Swing, Jump shout to your hearts content on the playground equipment
Go To the Zoo
Play zip my car
Walk to the Herman Park Golf Course and back to Fannin Street.
Take a ride on the miniature train
Walk through the Japanese Garden
Cool off in the butterfly garden
Jam at Miller Outdoor Theater
I think you've got the idea the possibilities or limited only by how frugal you want to make the trip.
I start my trips or family get togethers at "big Sam" and I tell everyone in the group if you get separated from us, go back to the statue and wait. I never get started until after 3:p m when the sun is on the way down. The tall trees offer very little shade before noon and seem to be the favorite hangout for the mosquitoes.
If you're there with a bunch of teens, before sending them off to play and remind them of the three No's.
1. No necking in the woods
2. No skinny dipping in the lake
3. No taking half dressed pictures for strangers, your Myspace page or for any amount of money.
Here's few things I always take with me on weekend visits to Herman Park,
Small barbecue pit
Charcoal or wood (don't try harvesting wood from the trees)
Plenty of water,
Lots of sandwiches
Blankets
Folding chairs
Ice chest w/ ice
Insect repellent
Kites
Cardboard (for sliding down Hippie Hill) *please freecycle your sliders to the other kids, but don't litter.
note* no glass is allowed in the park
These are great accessories, but you'll need a dolly if you over pack, because no one will want to help carry all that stuff, if you bring too much junk. Remember you're outdoors and roughing it will add character to the on the "cheap group weekend experience Houston's Herman park.
If this is not your kind of weekend adventure then try some of these "things to do in Houston this weekend."
Midtown Houston Farmer's Market
Things To Do In Houston On The Weekend
Saturday mornings meet and support the local growers who provide produce at the Midtown Houston Farmers Market. Come get some of the freshest produce and other foodstuffs that are healthy for you. And it's quicker than the time it'll take you to find your debit card hiding in your wallet and swipe it.If I seem to go on and on about the produce, it's because they are my favorites.
But they aren't the only things that you can get at the Midtown Houston Farmer's Market. There's fresh honey, baked goods and a few handcrafted items that show up from time to time at the market.
The real beginning of a first class meal is when you can buy fresh stringbeans from a vendor in the morning and that evening blanch and toss them in homemade dressings and serve them.
Over 20 local farms bring their produce: vegetables, fruits, and
Fresh baked breads & Maison Burdisso sweets
Fresh roasted, fair-trade & organic Katz Coffe~ Drug-free meats & free-range eggs

Nacncy Pelosi "Know Your Power Tour" Hits Houston This Week
Speaker Of The House Visits Houston
The Speaker of the US House of Representatives, visits Wortham Center to discuss and promote her new book in Houston Know Your Power. Subtitled "The Message To Americas Daughters." It has a variety of reviews on-line that I found interesting. On Amazon a reviewer stated " relatively tame and not especially original-never lose faith, recognize opportunity, organize, don't agonize, there is no secret sauce, etc.-readers will appreciate the spirit, the sincerity, and the context of the message delivered by one of the most powerful women in the nation.Houston's Tea Party Society plan to greet the speaker too. They are assembling a group of protesters to show their displeasure, because she chooses to support issues that they disagree with.
It doesn't matter which side of the fence that you're on, this week is your chance to hear, meet and greet the Speaker of the House, in person, when the "Know Your Power" tour hits Houston.
