Evernote on Your Kindle

Ranked #258 in Computers & Electronics, #3,427 overall

How does Evernote work on Your Kindle

Evernote on Kindle looks at how you can use the nifty notepad application from evernote.com with the latest Kindle Devices. If you are using the color Kindle Fire tablet, there is a free, evernote android app which should work with that and it is shown below.

Why do you need a Kindle Notepad? The e-ink Kindle doesn't currently have a standalone Notepad application. You can take notes inside book content but that's not the same as having a handy, separate app where you can jot down notes. That's where Evernote comes in ever so handy.

Free Evernote App for Kindle Fire Tablet

Android Evernote App is a Top Kindle Fire App

When you get your Kindle Fire tablet, you'll be able to use the FREE Evernote android app which also works with android mobile phones. It's pretty much a must-have application that is cross platform which means it works on numerous devices - PCs, Macs, Android mobiles and tablets, iPods, iPhones and more. Store all your notes, webpages, audio and photos and access them on most devices. Smart. The app is currently for US customers only via Amazon but when the Kindle Fire comes to the UK, this will be the app to use.

Section 2: Evernote for Traditional E-Ink Kindles

What's an E-Ink Kindle Device?

A Quick Run-Down for Kindle Newbies

An e-ink Kindle is one that currently has no color screen - the device is specifically made to read books and the screen only shows different shades of grey. Unlike the Kindle Fire which is a full color, glossy screen multimedia device - great for gaming, web, music and movies but not specifically great for reading books.

Evernote is not the best notepad for your e-ink Kindle because it hasn't been optimised for the device. But, if Evernote is your preferred Notepad and you'd like it to work with your Kindle - then read on! For US users, there's a far better, downloadable

What is Evernote?

Evernote's actually more than just a Notepad application. It is a fantastic tool which can be used for text but can also store images, web pages, snapshots or clippings, pdf files, audio and more.

It's basically a huge database filing system which stores everything you need in one handy place. And it is very easy to search. You can create different Notepads to group related information together. Use it online, on your PC, Mac, iPad or Mobile device. I use Evernote to store ideas for new articles, my recipes (which I can then view on a tablet device or my ipod while cooking) and I also store links to websites which I want to read through at a later date.

I use the free Evernote app on my iPod Touch (UK iPod Touch) which is small enough to slip into your pocket so you can make notes no matter where you are.

Evernote on Kindle E-Ink Devices

Using Evernote on the Greyscale B&W Kindle Devices

With the Kindle Web Browser (Home / Menu / Experimental / Launch Browser) you can access the mobile version of Evernote which is at www.evernote.com/m - you'll need to press the Sym button on your Kindle Keyboard to add the forward slash.

If you don't yet know how to view web pages on your e-ink Kindle (Kindle, Kindle Keyboard and Kindle Touch) here's how you do it:

1. Go to the Home page of your Kindle and select MENU
2. Choose 'Experimental'
3. Select 'Launch Browser'
4. You might need to press OK if your wireless connection isn't turned on already
5. The Kindle web browser should be displayed which you can now use
6. You need to navigate to the top to add in the evernote address (www.evernote.com/m) and select GO TO

As you'll see, the Evernote mobile version isn't much to look at on a Kindle. It does load up reasonably quickly and you can also search and view any notes which you have. I don't personally recommend the full Evernote website on a Kindle (www.evernote.com) because it takes quite some time to load and it is very awkward to navigate. In my own tests, I found it impossible to use any useful buttons like New Note, Edit or Delete. So that's why I recommend the mobile version if you just want to view notes.

One huge disadvantage of the mobile Evernote website is that although you can make a new note (press next page until you hit the end and select Quick Note) you are only able to apply a title and tags to it on the latest Kindle 3.

You can't currently place or input any text into the main section of a note. So not very useful! So how do you work around this?

Best Kindles for Taking Notes

If you want to do a lot of note-taking whilst reading on your Kindle OR you enjoy doing heavy searching of the dictionary or wikipedia, you may need to think hard about whether you'd be better using a Kindle with a physical keyboard OR a Kindle with a touchscreen keyboard.

Section 3: How to Email to Evernote from Your Kindle

Email to Evernote from Your e-Ink Kindle

If you have a Kindle Fire, you can use the Evernote Application

So if you want to be able to use your Kindle to add notes into Evernote, the best method is to send notes via email. Here's how:

1) On your PC/Mac go to the Evernote.com website and select "Settings" which is at the top of the web page.

2) Scroll down to the bottom of the page.

3) You should now be looking at a section called "Emailing to Evernote" - and there is your very own Evernote email address. You use the Evernote email address for sending content into your Evernote application via email.

4) Copy the Evernote email address and add it to your address book or preferably as a contact to an online email account such as yahoo or gmail.

5) On your Kindle, log in to your online email account using the Kindle web browser and compose your note. The subtitle section of your email will be the Note title and the content of your email will become the body of the note once opened up in Evernote.

6) Send the email to your Evernote email address.

Video: How to Email to Evernote

1) How to Email Evernote Not from the Kindle but it gives you an idea of how to send emails to Evernote! How to log in to your online email account and compose a note in the body of a new email and then send this to your Evernote email address. The title of your email becomes the note title when the email appears in your Evernote account.

2) How to Add an Email Contact into Gmail The second video shows you how you can add an email address into your email account as a contact. You'd normally do this with family and friends who you mail on a regular basis. If you use this method to store your Evernote email address as a contact, it will make it so easy for you to send emails quickly from your email account. Most online mail accounts have some form of adding in contacts - so the same theory applies.
