What is Evernote?

Evernote is one of the most popular free apps for PCs and Macs offered on the web today. It allows you to keep track of all of your notes, thoughts, ideas, web clippings, pictures, and more in one place with a simple organization tool. Just think, how great would it be to have all of the tidbits of information you need to keep working right at your fingertips? With Evernote, this possibility becomes reality. Here, find out how to download Evernote to your computer and discover ten great ways you can use Evernote to expedite your life. Image from Tekiweki.

Download Evernote To Your Computer

Downloading Evernote is simple, fast, and most importantly, FREE! Follow the steps below to add Evernote to your list of apps today.

  • 1Go to www.evernote.com. Click on "Download Now." On the next screen, Evernote should start to automatically download. If it does not, check for pop-ups that ask you if you want to download this program from the internet. Click "Yes" then click the green "Download Now" button again to begin downloading the program.
  • 2Double-click the Evernote file that was downloaded to your computer. This may be on your desktop or in a folder called "downloads." This will prompt a screen that asks you to agree to the Terms of Use. Read through them, then click "Agree."
  • 3On Mac: A window should pop up that displays the Evernote icon (the elephant with the green background) and a folder labeled "Applications." Drag the Evernote icon into the applications folder. This will start the installation process. When Evernote finishes installing, close the window.

On PC: After you agree to the terms of use, installation should begin automatically. www.evernote.com notes that you may download this manually if you so choose. When the installation (or "setup program") has completed, click "finish."
  • 4You should now be able to access Evernote via your applications. On a Mac, this will be in your "Applications" folder. On a PC, this will be under "All Programs." Voila! You have successfully downloaded Evernote.

You Can Also Download Evernote To Your Smartphone!

One of the great things about Evernote is that it comes on many platforms that all sync together!

Evernote is available on many Smartphones, including Blackberries, iPhones, and Droids. You can download these easily by accessing your phone's app store. From there, simply search for Evernote and tap "Install." With Evernote on your phone, you can add notes wherever you go and they will automatically sync up with your Evernote program on your computer as well as your account online. You can even take pictures from your phone, upload them to Evernote, and then see them on your computer or laptop! And of course, the Evernote app is FREE!

Uses for Evernote #1

Keep all your ideas in one place.

You're walking down the street and you see a skateboarder hurdle over a dumpster. Inspiration strikes! The character in your next novel will be a skateboarder. But you're nowhere near a computer, and you have no paper on hand. What to do? Easy. Pull out your smartphone and add a short note to Evernote saying "idea for novel: skateboarder character." Then, later, you can view your notes on your computer. "Oh, that's right," you say to yourself, "Bobbington McPants should be a skateboarder!" (Note: awesome names not included)

What? You're not an author, you say? Don't worry, you can still use this app to store your ideas, even if they are as simple as "groceries for dinner: eggs, noodles, granola" (another note: please don't ever combine these ingredients to make a dinner.)

Other ideas to store in Evernote: Phone numbers, to-do lists, books to read, gift ideas, pictures from your phone, and more!

Uses for Evernote #2

Bookmark snippets from the web.

There is a plethora of bookmarking sites out there, but let's face it, when you want to bookmark something, do you really want to sift through the whole page to find one bit of information? This is where Evernote comes in handy. Take a screenshot of the page you're on, or take a rectangular snapshot of just the text you need to remember. Another great feature about Evernote: all text, even the text in images, is searchable! For example, I just took a screenshot of the CNN article about surviving the zombie apocalypse. Very important, right? Now, when I view my screenshot in Evernote, I can search the word "zombie" and the program will highlight all mentions of "zombie" within the screenshot. Nifty!

Uses for Evernote #3

File your notes from class, or even take a picture of the whiteboard!

For all you crazy college kids out there, this one is for you. Just went through a stressful lecture, and you're not sure about what half of the professor said? This is where Evernote comes into play. Take a picture on your phone of your notes or of the whiteboard. Upload them to Evernote, and have a completely searchable database of your notes from class! Looking for a specific date, an equation, a quote? No problem. With one search for "to be, or not to be" you'll find your Hamlet notes within milliseconds. Truly, this is a wonderful use for Evernote.

Uses for Evernote #4

Keep a digital record of receipts/checks/prescriptions.

Face it- it's hard to keep track of a thousand slips of paper containing very important information, like receipts and checks. Why not keep them filed digitally? SImply take pictures of them on your camera and you can organize them with Evernote's customizable organization system. Make it as simple or as complex as you like. Want to file them by date? How about category? It's up to you.

Uses for Evernote #5

Start a journal.

Save a tree, and some time. Keep a journal of your daily events, your musings, or things you want to reflect on. Maybe you don't have time right at the moment to journal. That's okay. With Evernote on your desktop, your browser, your phone, or even your iPad, you can record your thoughts whenever and wherever you please.

Uses for Evernote #6

Compile your research.

Whether you're a student or an employee, everyone has research they need to keep handy and organized. Why not create a file in Evernote? You can write your own notes, bookmark your websites, add voice notes, keep track of emails and PDFs, and even write drafts of your report to compare them, all within the program. At the library? Take a picture of the text that you need and Evernote can detect the words, making the document searchable.

Uses for Evernote #7

Digitize real-life data.

You can use Evernote's photo feature to keep track of recipes, business cards, and driving directions/bus schedules. Index your favorite recipes and reap the benefits. If you only have certain items in your refridgerator or pantry, simply enter those items in the search box and receive a list of recipes that contain those items. Never forget a business associate again. By taking pictures of all of the business cards you get, their contact information will stay with you for as long as you need it. If you have directions to a friend's house, upload them to Evernote and keep them on hand for whenever you need.

Uses for Evernote #8

Store logins and passwords.

The internet is a complicated and sometimes dangerous place. Having the same login for every online account is practically digital suicide. But remembering ten different account usernames and passwords can be equally as hurtful. Why not store them all in one place on Evernote? You can sort them by type of website, security preference, or however else you would like.

Uses for Evernote #9

Use your voice to record your thoughts.

Maybe you're not the type of person who likes to type on their tiny smartphone keyboard when you're on the go. That's fine! With Evernote voice notes, you can simply record yourself saying the latest grocery list, to-do items, phone numbers, and more. Hear a good song on the radio, but don't know what it is? Record a snippet of it with Evernote so you can identify it later with its lyrics. Record anything you like to transcribe later. It's a very handy tool!

Uses for Evernote #10

Keep track of your emails/tweets/texts/etc.

I don't use this personally, but others have raved about how easy it is for them to keep track of their emails and other communication forms by forwarding all of their inbox material to Evernote. Another great feature I haven't mentioned- with Evernote, you get your own email address that you can email anything to. Evernote will convert that email into a note for you to peruse using the program. If you wanted, you could set up your personal email to forward all emails, or maybe just a certain type of email, to Evernote so you can organize and search through them. Instant inbox organization!

I just downloaded it to my KindleFire . . . haven't used it much yet. No camera on KindleFire and I have no iPhone. I didn't realize it was PC compatible . . . that might be something worth looking into! Thanks!
