All Anime Openings Are The Same

Okay...not ALL of them. But, the majority of them can be a little redundant. Now don't get me wrong...I love anime, but this is something that I find to be completely amusing. I came across an amazing video created by Derek Lieu compiling 92 anime openings into one four minute video showing the types of scenes that are used over and over in every opening. Hopefully, this creates an incentive for anime shows to create better opening. Even though most people skip them, some of us appreciate a little creativity.

Examples of Creative/Unique Openings

Here are some examples of anime opening that I believe are creative and/or unique. Although some of these opening still use similar scenes from the video above, I still believe that they are unique enough to stand out.

Paranoia Agent

This opening has got all the components to capture the viewers attention. First of all, the background video is different and flows with the animation. Second, the opening hints to the viewer that all the character's stories are somehow connected. Finally, there is something mysterious about watching people chuckle underwater, in the clouds...everywhere.

Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei

The creepiness of this video really gets to me every single time I watch it. The little dance step, all the twitchy hands, and basically just about everything else is just so different and not something that you might be comfortable seeing on TV. No wonder why the producers of the show changed it after only 10 episodes.

The Tatami Galaxy

This opening is just extremely captivating and unique. One thing special you'll notice is that none of the characters actually move, yet the scenery moving around them seems to be enough. Also, the music in the back is decent and the animation is very well done. If you are interested in the show, you MUST watch it to the very end as the ending is one of the best ever.
