Reference Guide
- "Chord" is a term in music that refers to a group of three or more different notes that are usually played at the same time (harmonically), but can be played one at a time (melodically).
What do all the big letters mean?
- The letter of a chord (e.g. C Chord) tells what the root note is. Every chord is built up from the root note by adding notes that are either a major third (four half steps) or a minor third (three half steps) above the last note. Example: To make a C Major Chord, start with a C, add an E (four half steps up from C), and add a G (three half steps up from E).
What do the number signs and slanted "b"s mean?
- A Sharp (#) alters whatever note it is applied to by raising it one half step. So if you go to play an F note, to make it sharp, play it one fret higher.
- A Flat (b) alters whatever note it is applied to by lowering it one half step. So if you go to play a B note, to make it flat, play it one fret lower.
What do the different types of chords mean?
- A Major Chord consists of a root note, a note that is a major third above the root, and a note that is a minor third above the second note. If a chord is only referred to by its root note, you can safely assume it is major.
- A Minor Chord consists of a root note, a note that is a minor third above the root, and a note that is a major third above the second note. All minor chords will be referred to with the root note followed by a lowercase "m."
- A Diminished Chord consists of a root note, a note that is a minor third above the root, and a note that is a minor third above the second note. Frequently another note is added a minor third above the third note. Diminished chords are referred to with the root note followed by "Dim," or with the root note followed by a superscript circle ("degree" symbol).
- An Augmented Chord consists of a root note, a note that is a major third above the root, and a note that is a major third above the second note. Augmented chords are referred to with the root note followed by "Aud," or with the root note followed by a superscript "plus" sign.
