Home School Mom Teaching Reading

This lens chronicles our success in teaching reading at home.  There is information here for everyone, if you home school if you child attends school.  Even for adults that want to improve their reading ability and comprehension.

Success Using Spell to Write And Read

I have been using Spell to Write and Read for about 3 months now and I wanted to update all of you on our success. My oldest who was basically a non reader is making remarkable progress. She knows almost all of the phonograms and does her spelling words happily everyday. She has even started sounding out words. Perhaps the most improvement was her ability to participate in school. She goes just once per week but in May when she stopped she wasn't able to complete any of the assigned work without help and now in August she is able to do some of her own work. Time to CELEBRATE!! Thanks Wanda Sanseri for this great program.

Teaching Phonics at Home

Every parent is also a teacher and with the correct tools parents can teach any child to read. Spelling to Write and Read along with Brain Gym is an unbeatable combination. Add in the Dominance Factor and nearly all questions about teaching your child to read can be answered. Don't settle for average reading skills with poor comprehension when above average results are possible.

Success with using Spell to Write and Read Phonics Reading Instruction

I have been using a phonics only based reading system for my home schooled children for nearly 8 weeks. The curriculum I am following is Wanda Sanseri's Spell to Write and Read. This system is based on the very popular Spalding phonics. In using Spell to Read and Write the teachers follows daily lesson plans which include: phonogram exercises, basic handwriting and letter formation. The sounds or phonograms quickly build upon each other and basic spelling rules are introduced and within a few months the students know several hundred words. I have seen dramatic improvement in both of the struggling readers and would highly recommend this program to anyone who wants a confidant reader with great spelling and comprehension skills.

vestibular stimulation and reading

balance activities can increase reading ability

Often times children who avoid reading are the ones who had many ear infections as young children. they tend also to be the children who like to sit for extended periods of time watching television or playing computer games. These inclinations provide an insight in the inner ear mechanisms. When a child sits still for long periods of time the fluid in the inner ear becomes adapted to this static state and when movement occurs the action becomes the non desired state by the body.

What can you do to help? Have your child move, walk, run stand up. The exercises in the book Brain Gym are amazing. It is hard to believe that such simple motions can actually help a struggling reader. We do daily the cross pattern and elephant which both help with vestibular development. I noticed that my child became more stable and balanced and was better able to concentrate on the reading activities.

Hydration an often over looked component

When working with a slow or reluctant reading every component matters. Being correctly or adequately hydrated during instruction may help with electrical impulses to the brain. If a child seems to being having trouble focusing on spelling a word often I suggest a quick water break. We take a moment to drink fresh cool water. then we jump right back into the lesson often times the lesson proceeds along without any further confussion.

The Protein Connection

Protein Helps Your Brain Work

A simple and healthy way to help your child focus on reading is to add protein rich food to your diet. Foods like eggs, cheese, chicken beef and fish are all good sources of protein. Try to have your child start their day with a healthy amount of protein. It is also good to avoid simple and refined foods. Unfortunately these simple and easy to serve foods are all too common in the diets of our children. Give your kids a good start to reading by serving a healthy varied diet of fresh fruits and vegetables and protein. Hopefully you will see the benefit in ability to focus and improved reading ability.

Reader Feedback

Evelyn_Saenz

Phonics is very important for teaching children to read and spell. As a Chapter One Teacher I taught phonics to k-6 in a school that hadn't taught it for years. I found as a homeschool program I liked Explode the Code but phonics alone won't do it.Please check out my lens www.squidoo.beginningreaders
