Tips on how to use the spices

By Chris Donald

The way to a man's heart is through his stomach as they say. Well not only is this true for man it is true for everyone. Good tasting food is a must for it being palatable. Purely bland food is a tough nut to crack. You can have the bland food for a day and not more than that and will crave for something tastier than that.

The herbs and the spices that we add to the food make it tastier to eat. The only precaution that you need to take is that you should use the fresh spices and in adequate quantities.

The adequate and proportionate mix is definitely warranted when adding these spices to the food. These spices will generally come in powder or the leaves form.

For addition of spices in the food you need to know a few things. The first and foremost is what is called compatibility. This is to know what type of spices gel well with other spices. This is the same way as you should which wine goes with what kind of food.

While making the food make sure that quantity is right. If it is fewer things might still turn out OK but if the spices are more then there is now way you can turn the clock back. To get to know the right quantity is a trial and error method. As a guide you can read the recipe books to get an idea about the exact quantities.

If you are reading the recipe books they generally tend to border on more commercial side of things which means the quantities and styles are more over the top. You may need use you own estimate for the home cooked food.

Packaging of spices is very important as that retains the freshness, taste and the flavor of the spices. So make sure that you buy spices of a good brand and once if you opened them make sure to close them properly or seal the mouth of the bottle or the pack correctly

According to Tilo, the Mistress of Spices:

"Each spice has a special day to it. For turmeric it is Sunday, when light drips fat and butter-colored into the bins to be soaked up glowing, when you pray to the nine planets for love and luck."

But what about the other days?

Thanks for our comments. My late mother used all kinds of herbs and spices, for cooking but also because she believed in their healing properties. My husband and I are just now beginning to learn about the medicinal uses for spices. It's quite an exploration. Turmeric and ginger were two spices we had never really used before but we're learning how.

Thanks for the tips . . spices are so important to the enjoyment of a meal (and we actually eat less by slowing down to taste food when it is spiced to our liking).
