An Astonishing Number Of Everyday Expressions Come From The Bible

Did you know that Sign of the times or Twinkling of an eye or Drop in the Bucket or Red Sky at Night and many other apparently modern phrases also originate from the Bible?

This isn't surprising because until recent times the Bible was likely to be the only book to be found in the average home so generations of authors were knowingly or unknowingly taught by or inspired by the world's greatest book. The King James Version (KJV) of the Bible is an acknowledged literary masterpiece. We have also had a great deal of the Bible read aloud to us , in church, at school and elsewhere.

But what surprised me when researching my lens The Bible in Facts and Figures was how many not-overtly religious phrases and expressions originate from the Bible see below for a never-ending list.

It is true that many common sayiings today came from the bible OR are very similar and mean virtually the same thing.

However sometimes people misinterpret scripture and read into them what they need to hear or what they want to get out of it. So I too, have created religious lenses. I have 4 of them in a series starting with Christian Myths and Misnomers. Each page focuses on different myths that man has come up with and over time people believed as fact. Actually after the lens intro I say, Myth or Fact? Then I give good solid evidence whether it is true or hype. It's kinda fun, but weird too that so many people have taken things as falsehoods and after passing them down for generations THAT is the belief.

Anyhow I liked the flow of this lens - laid out nicely.

I only use the King James Bible cause its the only one that has the ful truth as the holy spirit inspired it back in 1611. When man started chainging it even to amke it easier to read like the NJV its changing Gods word. God knows how we need his word. He knows it can only strengthen us by reading something more difficutlt. Not only that but some of the changed verses says God is a lier. For instence John 3:16. the NIV takes the word begotten out. This now means that Jesus is Gods only son. But many other places it takes about us the ones that are saved by Jesus Christ are his sons. So which is the truth? I believe the orignal is the truth. Man changed the truth not God. Thank you for sharing.
  • Mr. Collins Nov 12, 2010 @ 9:59 pm | delete
dude, i hate to burst your bubble, but the most "spirit inspired" Bible is the one by Wycliffe. King James actually cut out parts of the old testament because he was afraid the English people would read it and rebel against his reign, and if you really want the truest, God inspired Word then you had best take a Greek and Hebrew class because those scripts are the most untouched. Though that is a neat thing to know, it is not necessary because God promises the provision of his word and i think he might be big enough to do that:) You don't have to believe me but if you are as studious a Christian as you make yourself out to be, you will at least look into it. have a blessed day!!!!!!!
  • cwhig Jan 2, 2011 @ 9:20 am | delete
Good point, Mr. C. It's also the case that the team of translators put together by King James borrowed nearly 90 percent of their text from Wycliffe's translation.
  • ncalgator Nov 12, 2011 @ 11:39 pm | delete
I hate to burst your bubble as well. There were 6 teams that comprised the AV translation effort, and while they did use previous versions (NOT just Wycliffe's) as a 'guide', they did their own translations of the extant manuscripts, constantly checking and rechecking each teams translation to ensure accuracy. Please read the preface to the King James as written composed by the translators...it might give you a clue as to what they actually intended to do with the extant 'manuscripts' (uncials, cursives, lectionaries, and papyri). And to the previous poster who asserts that KING JAMES cut out part of the OT, that is absolutely absurd (My people perish from a lack of knowledge - (Hosea 4:6). This is simply urban myth from pedantic wanna be 'scholars'. My wise father once told me "a LITTLE knowledge can be a dangerous thing).

What is the importance of the Bible to literature?

As said before the Bible would have been one of the few books to be found in a home for many hundreds of years, in fact if there was no Bible there was likely to be no books at all. Bibles were very common gifts or given as a reward for loyal service. So reading the Bible would be a frequent occupation for any educated person. The Old Testament in particular has many interesting and not necessarily religious stories, stories of wars, of natural disasters, of love affairs or treachery and faithfulness. So how could the bible not be an influence over nearly every author of previous centuries.
