Elmo is a Muppet on the children's television show Sesame Street. He is a furry red monster with large white eyes and an orange nose. He currently hosts the last full 15 minute segment on Sesame Street, Elmo's World, which is aimed at toddlers. His puppeteer is Kevin Clash, who uses falsetto to produce his voice. Some great history of Elmo

Wiki's history of Elmo

Elmo Loves You!!Elmo is self-described as three-and-a-half years old and characteristically refers to himself in the third person (e.g. "Elmo has a question" rather than, "I have a question"). Sesame Street staff writer Nancy Sans once described Elmo's origins: "There was this extra red puppet lying around and the cast would pick him up sometimes and try to create a personality, but nothing seemed to materialize."[citation needed] The puppet was performed by Caroll Spinney in the early 1970s, Brian Muehl from 1979-1981, and the late Richard Hunt from 1981-1984. Sans continues that "...one day [in 1984], Kevin Clash, a talented puppeteer, raised him up and brought energy and life into Elmo and from that day forward we would all write for Elmo. Kevin's performance inspired the writers to develop Elmo's character. [1] John Tartaglia, Matt Vogel, and Jim Martin have all been secondary performers for the character, providing movement for Elmo's arms and legs, particularly in green-screen shots.

Elmo on a 2009 Rose Parade floatAfter becoming a regular guest on The Rosie O'Donnell Show,[when?] Elmo began touring the talk-show circuit. He has appeared on Martha Stewart Living and Martha, The Tony Danza Show, Rove Live, Wait Wait...Don't Tell Me!,[2] and The View. Elmo and a developmental expert gave babysitting tips on the June 18, 2005 episode of Teen Kids News. He has also appeared on Emeril Live, helping Emeril make (non-alcoholic) eggnog during a Holiday Special shown in December, 2008. Kevin Clash and Aaron Neville were also guests on this show. On a special episode of Oprah called "The Faces Behind The Famous Names," Kevin Clash and Elmo appeared at the same time.[3]

Elmo was the star of the 1999 full-length, theatrically-released motion picture Elmo in Grouchland. He also starred in the film Elmo Saves Christmas.

Elmo also appeared in a fifth season episode of The West Wing along with his friends Zoe and Big Bird. In the March 3, 2004 episode "Eppur Si Muove," Elmo receives a medical checkup from Abbey Bartlet, the First Lady, and cheekily questions her about the validity of her medical license.

Elmo is the only non-human puppet ever to testify before the U.S. Congress. At the request and with the assistance of Rep. Duke Cunningham, he testified before the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services and Education in April 2002, urging support for increased funding in music education.[4]

Emeril and Elmo's Healthy Start was a special featuring Elmo and Emeril Lagasse that aired on November 4, 2005 at 8 p.m. as part of the Food Network's second annual "Cook With Your Kids Week". The special was produced in conjunction with Sesame Workshop's Healthy Habits for Life program.

Elmo's Home is on Sesame Street

Sesame Street's Group

Hold on to your feathers - Sesame Street is nearly 40! Since 1969, children and adults alike have flocked to the place where multiethnic, multigenerational, and even multispecies residents coexist in harmony. The people on this very special street learn life's lessons together, provide viewers with strong role models, and teach children that everyone brings a special ability to the community. Here, children learn to use their imaginations, build social skills, and respect people's differences.

Early days on Sesame Street

The phenomenon that changed the face of children's television came about after co-founder Joan Ganz Cooney observed that children in underserved communities were at a disadvantage when it came to school preparedness. She assembled a team of educational advisors, researchers, and television producers to create a show that would directly impact children's lives.

"Our original goal was simple: to create a successful television program that would make a difference in the lives of children, in particular, poor inner-city children, and help prepare them for school," Cooney says. This goal seemed revolutionary at the time - and it worked. Sesame Street was an instant success.

Improving children's lives

Sesame Street put television to work as an educational tool, and independent research has repeatedly and conclusively proven that the approach succeeds in improving cognitive skills, teaching respect and social skills, and promoting school readiness skills. Children who watch the show as two-year-olds gain an advantage in math, vocabulary, and other school readiness skills by the time they are five.

A unique brand of humor

While Sesame Street's educational approach is key, it leaves plenty of room for humor. Sesame Street's iconic comedic style appeals to children and their parents alike, encouraging intergenerational co-viewing. Most notably, this style includes parodies of popular television shows for grown- ups, such as A's Anatomy, RSI: Rhyme Scene Investigation, and Meal or No Meal.

The Street continues to innovate

Sesame Street is constantly evolving and continuing to change the face of children's media. Looking to increase children's interactivity with the show, the Elmo's World segment debuted in Season 30. Elmo's World takes place in a computer animated crayon-drawn room, and each segment focuses on a particular topic (examples include dogs, bananas, and singing) with supporting skits and interviews.

Research conducted revealed that children's participation in the show (singing, dancing, or smiling) increased with repeat viewings. Elmo's World continues to be a successful component of Sesame Street and leads the way to the 40th season milestone.

The longest street in the world

Each of Sesame Workshop's international co-productions is carefully crafted to meet local children's specific needs. Child development experts in each country work with local directors, producers, and writers to translate the show's magic in a way that captures the rich cultural flavors of each region. The engaging live action, animation, and colorful characters create a world of fun for young children and their families.

Northern Ireland became the newest member of the international Sesame Street family in April 2008, when Sesame Tree hit the airwaves on BBC Northern Ireland. The new show promotes respect and understanding and encourages Northern Ireland's children to explore and appreciate the world around them.

Extending the Sesame Street experience

Sesame Street has also expanded its core educational objectives to include initiatives that help equip children with the skills to succeed in the world. Topics include healthy eating, school preparedness, music, and bilingual learning. Through these initiatives, Sesame Workshop uses the positive power of the Sesame Street experience to reach as many children and families as possible and have maximum impact on their lives.

Combining education and entertainment through a research-based curriculum, featuring a multicultural cast, and giving kids honest answers to tough questions has made Sesame Street one of the most popular children's television programs in the world. Today, approximately eight million viewers watch Sesame Street each week, while more than 77 million are Sesame Street "graduates." As of 2008, the program has received more Emmy Awards than any other television show in history with 109 wins.

Elmo loves to practice his shapes!
Before the party, hide block shapes throughout the party area. To play, send the children on a hunt for them. When every player has found a block, it's time to distribute a small prize. You say, "if you found a red square, come get a prize! If you found a blue circle, come get a prize, and so on until every child receives a treat.
  • Swim Dorothy Swim
"Uh-Oh!", Elmo's pet fish Dorothy jumped out of her bowl!
Purchase a large fish bowl and three orange bean bags, or plastic goldfish. March an "x" on the floor, a reasonable distance from the bowl. The children will take turns tossing the fish into the bowl.
Variation: Amazingmoms visitor Hannah Swartz, adapted this game by Painting a large fishbowl on a box. She cut the lid off the box and provided homemade goldfish beanbags for the children to toss into the box. "This made it easy for the 3-5 year olds at my party to feel successful!"

The fish were made with orange socks, dried beans, plastic google eyes, and felt fins. She twisted a rubber band to close the beanbag and the remaining fabric became the goldfish tail. Older kids will enjoy making this Dorothy the fish craft!

"Elmo says Hop up and down!"
If your party guests are old enough, then using the traditional rules
of "do nothing unless the leader says" will work. If a child moves

  • Elmo Art

Provide the children items with which to create a collage on their E.
