Spook-Tacular History of Halloween

Ever wondered what Halloween is really celebrating? Are we really celebrating anything - or just having fun?

Halloween is one of the world's oldest holidays

The history of Halloween has been inspired by traditions that have been passed down from generation to generation.

The origin of Halloween can be dated back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced sow-in) and with its emphasis on the supernatural, was decidedly pagan.

It was believed that on the night of October 31st the ghosts of the dead would return. The Druids would observe this occasion by building huge hallowed bonfires, where the community would assemble to burn crops and animals as sacrifices to the Celtic deities. During this celebration the Celtics would dress up in costume, believed to be from small animal heads and skins. At the end of the festivities they would use flames from the sacred bonfires to relight their hearth fires, which they had extinguished prior to the celebration, to provide them with warmth for the upcoming cold and harsh winter.

Halloween is still celebrated in several countries around the world

The Romans would eventually conquer most of the Celtic lands and in the course of the 400 years that they ruled this land, would combine 2 festivals of Roman origin with the traditional Samhain. It was during this time the holiday became to be known as All-Hallows Eve.

Halloween - the word itself - has been altered from All Hollows Eve, or All Saints Day, and its origin can be traced to the Catholic Church. Despite the attempts made to convert the ancient beliefs, this way of celebration would continue to live on in new guises. People continued to observe All Hallows Eve as a time of the wandering dead, only the mystical beings were now thought to be evil.

Various Halloween customs were brought to America as European immigrants began to settle. The celebration of Halloween was greatly restricted during colonial times due to the rigid Protestant beliefs. Public events were held to celebrate the harvest where the communities would dance, sing, tell each others fortunes, and relate tales of the dead. These festivities included the telling of ghost stories and different manners of causing mischief.

Fortunately for us, and despite the origins, the tradition of celebrating Halloween has evolved into a celebration of good clean fun.
