The winter solstice is the day of the year that has the least hours of daylight, because colder weather normally follows the solstice the season is usually regarded as starting on the solstice.

Depending on the year it starts between December 21st and 22nd and ends On March 20th or 21st in the Northern Hemisphere. In the Sourthern Hemisphere winter begins on June 1st and ends on August 31st.

The first day of winter this year "2011" is December 22nd.

Snow activities

Lots of winter activities involve the use of snow it can be man-made, using snow cannons

Bobsledding-Teams make timed runs down narrow, turning, banked, man made ice covered tracks in a sled you can steer.

Skiing -Gliding over snow using fiberglass thin planks called skis, which are strapped to the skiers feet.

Sledding - One of my favorite activities as a child using a sled to ride down a hill. I used to spend the entire day sledding with my brothers and friends. Then as the sun was going down we would go inside for hot chocolate and warm our frozen fingers and toes.

Snowball fight - A game in which snowballs are thrown with the intention of hitting someone else.

Snowboarding - A sport in which people strap a board to their feet and slide down a snow-covered mountain.

Snowman building - Making a manlike model with snow. I remember as a child making a snowman as big as we possibly could. They would always be the last thing to melt as it got warmer. My children used to love dressing up the snowman with hats, gloves and scarfs. using sticks for arms and rocks for a smile.

Snowmobiling - Driving in snow, across frozen lakes, or on public trails, or around mountains.

Snowshoeing - A way to travel on top of the snow by widenning the surface area of the feet by wearing snowshoes.

Ice activities

Many winter activities and sports are on ice, which can be made into an ice rink.

Curling- Made up of a team which uses brooms and stones to slide your stones into a bullseye and get your opponent's stones out of it.

Ice biking- Continuing regular cycling activities in the winter and cold weather.

Ice boating- A way of travel in a specialized boat fitted with skis or runners and designed to run over ice instead of water.

Ice climbing - The activity of climbing ice formations such as icefalls and frozen waterfalls.

Ice diving- A type of diving where the dive takes place under ice.

Ice fishing - Catching fish with lines and hooks through an opening in the ice on a frozen body of water.

Ice hockey - A team sport played on the ice with skates, sticks, and a puck. Each team tries to send the puck into the opposing team's net.

Ice racing- Racing cars on ice surfaces.

Ice sculpture -Sculptures that are carved out of blocks of ice.

Ice skating - A way to move on ice with skates, narrow bladelike devices fitted into special boots. I love to ice skate, I learned how when I was a child. When I was little we had a pool and every year my dad would take it down.

When it got cold enough he would fill up the hole where the pool was with water. We would impatiently wait for it to freeze and then spend many funfillled hours skating.
