Everything About Ecstasy (Also Known As MDMA)

Twenty years ago, I wrote the first book ever published about Ecstasy: the mind changing chemical called MDMA. When I wrote the book, Ecstasy was legal and so I know a lot about its effects on people from first hand experience.

The book is called Ecstasy: the MDMA Story by Bruce Eisner and it was first printed in 1989 and I did another edition in 1993.

The experience for me was so powerful that I spent several years researching a wide range of aspects about this positive and empathetic compound. This lens focuses on resources and information Ecstasy updated to 2009!

About Writing the Book

Bruce eisner 1987Twenty years ago I wrote Ecstasy: The MDMA Story. It was the first comprehensive overview of a drug which had been legal until 1985. I was able to use the drug and to observe its effects on different groups of people. This picture of me was taken back then.

I wrote the book in 1987 and 1988 and it was published in 1989. A second edition was published in 1993. It has sold almost 100,000 copies since then and was even translated into Spanish.

Here is a screenshot of the first couple of paragraphs of Chapter 1.

Ecstasy or Empathy?

In Ecstasy: The MDMA Story, Bruce Eisner quotes a distributor who claimed to have originated the name Ecstasy. He said he picked it "because it would sell better than calling it 'Empathy.'

'Empathy' would be more appropriate, but how many people know what it means?" In its traditional sense, ecstasy has a spiritual connotation, but in common usage it simply means intense pleasure--often the kind associated with sex
