History Trivia Tidbits

Did you know?

The word "Halloween" is derived from All Hallows Eve, which occurs on November 1. The "All Hollows Day" or "All Saints Day". It is an important date on the Catholic calendar, a time to observe and honor saints.

People believed that the souls of the dead come back to earth to visit their families or friends. People began to call November 1st as a holy or "Hallowed" day. It was to be called Al Hallow's Day. Which was later shortened to what we know today as Halloween.

Throughout the centuries, pagan and Christian beliefs intertwine in a hodgepodge of celebrations from October 31st through November 5th, all of which appear both to challenge the ascendancy of the dark and to revel in its mystery.

Halloween is on October 31st, the last day of the Celtic calendar. It was originally a pagan holiday, honoring the dead. Halloween was referred to as All Hallows Eve and dates back to over 2000 years ago.

More HISTORY

Trick-or-Treating is believed to have originated with a ninth-century European custom called "souling". All Souls Day (November 2), early Christians used to walk from village to village begging for "soul cakes". These cakes were made out of square pieces of bread with currants. The more soul cakes the beggars would receive, the more prayers they would promise to say on behalf of the dead relatives of the donors. At the time, it was believed that the dead remained in limbo after death. People thought that prayers could help hasten a soul's passage to heaven.

Halloween candy sales average about 2 billion dollars annually in the United States.

Orange and black are Halloween colors because orange is associated with the Fall harvest and black is associated with darkness and death.

The world's biggest pumpkin weighed 1385 pounds.

Signs of a werewolf are a unibrow, hair palms, tattoos, and a long middle finger.

The Ouija Board ended up outselling the game of Monopoly in its first full year at Salem. Over two million copies of the Ouija Board were shipped.

If you see a spider on Halloween, it is the spirit of a loved on watching over you.

Jack o' lanterns originated in Ireland where people placed candles in hollowed-out turnips to keep away spirits and ghosts on the Samhain holiday.

TOP TEN HAUNTED HOUSES

Here is a review of the "Top Ten Haunted Houses."

Whether you believe or not, the stories that have been handed down, will indeed intrigue your imagination. A brief feature of the top two.

Let's begin,

1.The Myrtles Plantation Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

The witching hour at the Myrtles Plantation is three o'clock. At that hour, Chloe, (not me) sometimes peers in on sleeping guests, spectoral children jump up and down on the beds, and 17 mysterious footsteps are heard on the creaking wooden staircase. The Myrtles isn't an ordinary plantation. It's supposed to be one of the most haunted houses in America. Find out more about the HISTORY of the Myrtles Plantation.
Perhaps you are looking for a Bed & Breakfast, why not spend a night at MYRTLES PLANTATION if you dare!

2.The LaLaurie House Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Located in New Orleans has surely endured the most gruesome history, and its reputation for otherworldly visitations is well-deserved and well-documented.
On April 10, 1834, a fire broke out in the LaLaurie home, and when the volunteer fireman came to the scene, they discovered the horror hidden inside. Dozens of slaves were reportedly chained to the wall in a secret attic. Some were in cages, and body parts were strewn about haphazardly. Horrible mutilations had been perpetrated, and some slaves cried out begging to be put out of their pain and misery. Learn more about the evil behind this house, LaLaurie

Ghosting

Start a new tradition

"Ghost" Your Friends

Want to begin a new Halloween tradition in your neighborhood, and get the excitement started early? Ever been Ghosted? Ghosting is done a week or more before the big day.

All you need is some Halloween candy, 2 brown paper lunch bags, 2 copies of the "You've Been Ghosted" letter and 2 copies of the Ghost picture. Put the candy, one letter and one picture in each of the brown paper bags.

When it's dark, sneak over to a neighbor's house with an adult, leave the bag on their porch, ring the bell and run away. Don't let them see you.

Your Ghosted neighbors will in turn, ghost two more people. Before you know it, it will spread throughout the neighborhood.

Copy this letter, and include a picture of a ghost.

"You've Been Ghosted"

Now it's your turn to "ghost" two other people in your neighborhood.

You should "ghost" these people within 2 days of receiving your treat.

Hang the ghost on your front door so that everyone can see that you have been "ghosted" and will not ghost you again. This will also let you know who you can ghost.

Fill 2 bags with candy and treats. Copy this letter and the ghost twice. Include treats, letter, and ghost in your bag of goodies for the neighbors that you choose.

After dark, and only with an adult, "ghost" 2 of your neighbors. Do not let the person that you are "ghosting" see you, for it adds to the fun of it all. Place the treat bag on the doorstep, ring the doorbell and run!

It will be fun to see how many ghosts will appear in our neighborhood by Halloween.

Whether you are a Mom, Daycare provider, Scout leader, Grandma. You will love these crafts!

Looking for something to keep the kids busy? I have found a great site to do just that.

KABOOSE

Here is a simple project to get you started.

Fun Halloween Finger Puppets

Finger puppets have long been a favorite for kids. This year, make some fun and ghoulish creatures to put on your hands. Invite your friends over to make some with you!

What you'll need:

Patterns (Pattern 1, Pattern 2)

Construction paper (black, white, orange, green, purple, yellow)

Black craft pen or Sharpie marker

Scissors

White craft glue

Hot glue or tape

How to make it:

Print off both sets of patterns. (Link provided below for patterns).

Cut out the patterns and trace onto construction paper: white for mummy and ghost, black for cat and vampire, orange for pumpkin and green for witch. If you prefer, place the construction paper on the table, place pattern sheet over the top and use a ball point pen to trace the lines on the printed pattern, creating an indent on the construction paper underneath.

Cut out finger puppets. (for younger children, cut out patterns for them).

Use a black craft pen to decorate each puppet. Draw wiggly lines across the front of the mummy, draw lines and facial features on the pumpkin, and draw a face on the ghost.

Cut pieces of construction paper out to decorate the witch's hat and dress, as well as the vampire's purple face and shirt, and the cat's yellow eyes.

Use white craft glue to stick them on.
Once you are finished decorating the puppets, wrap the bottom square section around your child's finger for sizing. Remove from finger and hot glue them back together to form the tube.

Notes:

For class projects, cut out the puppet figures ahead of time so that children can decorate during class.

This will leave enough time for a fun puppet show.
These puppets make fun party favors. This is a good project during the party, or for early bird guests to work on as others arrive.
If this is a class project or party favor, have the children write their names on the back of the finger tube so that they don't get theirs confused with someone else's.
