Do you Google?

The Google brand is so well know that I just used the name as a verb.

We now say I'll Google it instead of I'll search for it or I'll look in the dictionary.

We all use Google many times a day.

But do you know what is behind their colourful logo?

A lot more than you might think...

The Google Masterplan

This is a cool little overview of WHY and HOW Google is evil. If you don't believe me, watch it. It's not long at all. 3 minutes long.

1. Marketshare

Worldwide, Google holds a marketshare of 44.1%. The biggest rival Yahoo holds 28.7%, and MSN has 12.5%. Even more distinct are the numbers in Germany: with a market share just under 90%, Google outclasses the international competitors.

2. PageRank

Shortly after the founders of Google developed the PageRank algorithm in 1997 the search engine was quickly enjoying enormous popularity. The search engine was better than everything known so far. The number of enthusiastic users rapidly increases daily.

3. Advertising

Today, Google is one of the fastest growing companies worldwide. Within 4 years Google had a 70-fold increase in sales.

4. Access to Information

From the beginning, money was not important to the founders of Google. they wanted to make the world a better place. It's their vision to make any kind of information accessible to anybody. Controlled by Google, of course.

5. Products

Today, Google offers its search function in more than 100 languages. In addition, they offer a constantly growing list of currently over 80 free features. Using these services (like gmail) users reveal more and more private information to Google.

6. Googleware

In the beginning, Larry Page and Sergey Brin assembled their computers themselves from individual parts. so they always had the ideal hardware for the self-written software. Even today the so-called Googleware is tailored specific to Google's requirements.

Due to this perfect blend of hardware and software Google has an enormous computing power with minimal expenses. Nothing can compare.

7. Collecting

Gmail, Google's free email service today offers nearly 3GB of storage. And it increases every day. So you'll never need to delete an email, ever. This huge data storage is financed by advertising.

All incoming and outgoing mails are scoured for certain keywords so google can display related ads next to the emails. Google has all your emails stored on their servers. And is able to sort them by keyword if it wishes.

Google is also collecting data in other ways. The Google homepage, for example, sets a cookie (a small file) on your computer which is valid until the year 2038.

8. Profiles

Using all these data, Google could very easily create very detailed profiles of its users. Google is denying this, but some facts actually point to this intention.

With a court proceeding, google officially restrains against delivery of user information to the US government for the purpose of research. However, the former CIA agent Robert David Steele speaks about a cooperation between Google and the CIA. He even claims that Google received money from the CIA at its beginnings.

9. Total Control

Google's turnover speaks its own language. Google is the biggest existing provider for online services. But Google has now also reached the offline market. In North America, Google already provides advertising to magazines, newspapers, and radiostations.

10. Genetics

Google is cooperating with the leading molecular scientist Dr. Craig Venter, who profoundly participated in decoding the human genome. Google is able to contribute enormous computing power as well as the required data storage for this work. More than the government could ever provide.

Dr. Craig Venter claims that Google could soon start a service that would allow anybody to check their own hereditary faults and diseases. Google will then also get an insight into its users genes.

Google and the CIA

Here is an interesting article for you to read about this whole Google/CIA mess.

The Google Book

The book you need to get if you want to KNOW about Google...

Well, Lewis my dear --> I still love you lots even though you offer up the premise that Google is evil. Sure there are times I get my dander up over those crazy PRs and Google dropping my lenses mysteriously from their search results, but I'm a patient woman and I will wait for Google to come around. ;) hugs to you for a great year!
