Everything Green In Our World

Ranked #4,764 in Culture & Society, #101,141 overall

We live in a green world

Green is the colour of the plant world and of the faery folk. It is the colour of sunlight transformed into matter by photosynthesis. Green is the miracle of life's creation on this planet, earth verdancy and the deep seas.

Green stimulates our connection between body, mind, spirit and creation. I love to be surrounded by the green of the world, and here you will find a collection of all things green, gathered in pleasure and praise to our beautiful planet.

'Verde que te quiero verde. Verde viento. Verde ramas.
Green I love you green. Green Wind. Green branches."

Chlorophyll is the basic green of the world

And we need Chlorophyll in order to exist

We need the colour green in order to exist. The green of the world starts in plants; and that green is chlorophyll. All the green forests and fields are green because of chlorophyll.

Plants use chlorophyll to photosynthesize and make sugars and starches in their leaves in order to live. Without green chlorophyll there would be no leaves, flowers, fruits, seeds or roots to eat. So there would be no ruminant animals for lions and tigers to eat, no job for bees and other pollinators, no birds and definitely no humans. There would also be no atmosphere to breathe.

Without the green of plants, the world as we know it cannot exist. So is green your favourite colour now?

Light contains all the colours of the rainbow. The whole spectrum of colours is revealed when sunlight is refracted through water droplets in the sky and we see a rainbow.

Our eyes and brains distinguish the different colours within the spectrum of light by perceiving and differentiating the different wavelengths in each colour.

Rainbow Squid by Janusz

Different colours have quite noticable effects upon the body, mind and spirit. Below is a brief summary of the most commonly experienced reactions to individual colours. You can read through the properties of the colours of the rainbow here, and then vote on your favourite.

The colour Red

Red is the same color as our blood. It is full of life, vitality, passion, lust and anger.

Red is fiery energy, action, drive, power, force and creativity; red is the colour of fire. Red is the rising and setting of the sun; its coming and going marks the beginning and ending the day.

The colour Orange

Orange is sunny and warm. You can see it in the flames of a fire and the glow of a sunset. It is the colour of oranges, carrots, apricots, pumpkins, and all things healthy and good. Orange makes you smile, and orange is the colour of laughter.

The colour Yellow

Yellow is sunshine and all things bright and beautiful. They called him mellow yellow, quite rightly, and we all lived in a yellow submarine for a time. Yellow stimulates the mind in sparky ways.

Some of the earliest plants on earth were massive ferns

Tree ferns and the Koru

The Dicksonia antarctica tree fern first grew in moist forests during the Jurrasic period alongside the dinasours. This living relic from primeval times was introduced to Europe by James Dickson in the 1750's. It forms a trunk that can grow up to 20 feet high and has a canopy spread of up to 8 feet.

A Frond From A Dicksonia Antarctica Unfurls:
In Tasmania, Maoris use the trunk as a food source, the pith of the trunk being eaten either cooked or raw as a good source of starch. They also take the unfolding fern frond as a symbol of new beginnings, growth, life, peace, tranquility and endearment, and name it The koru.

Green Figures in Myth, Legend and Poetry

The Green Man

Who is the Green Man? He is the Green Man, Jack in the Green, the Old Man of the Woods, Green George and many other things to many men. His face looks out at us from the carved beams and pillars of old churches, and as Jack in the Green, he can still be seen as the Lord of Misrule who dances ahead of the May Queen in many May Day processions, such as those at Hastings and Knutsfordhe.

"His roots may go back to the shadow hunters who painted the caves of Lascaux. and Altimira, and his image has been chiselled in wood and stone even to this day by men and women who no longer know his story, but sense that something old and strong and tremendously important lies behind his leafy mask." With thanks to Mike harding at www.mikeharding.co.uk

The Green Man may be also linked to Robin Hood, Robin Goodfellow, Puck and Father Christmas, but one common theme runs through all the disparate images and myths; death and rebirth, and the Green Spirit that is all life.

The Eden Grass Woman By Alison (Own work) [Public domain], via Wikimedia Commons

The Green Man is constantly resurfacing in our world. I visited The Eden Project in Cornwall, and encountered this magical piece of land art close up; she casts quite a spell around her.

Santa was originally green

image from www.postcardimages.net

Our modern day Father Christmas dates back at least as far as the 17th century in Britain, and pictures of him survive from that era portraying him as a jolly, well-nourished, bearded man dressed in a long, green, fur-lined robe. He typified the spirit of good cheer at Christmas.

In Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol, the "Ghost of Christmas Present" was described as a great genial man in a green coat lined with fur. This green robed figure takes Scrooge through the bustling streets of London on Christmas morning, sprinkling the essence of Christmas, and bringing happiness to all he passes.

Sir Gawain and the Green Knight

One of the earliest English epic poems, Gawain and The Green Knight, seems to refer to yet another manifestation of the Green Man as the God that dies and is reborn.

Loading

Gawain and The Green Knight is a late 14th-century romance about chivalry and honour in the court of King Arthur. A terrifying green warrior lays down a challenge to the knights for one of them to strike him with an axe, and take a return blow from him in a year and a day. Gawain accepts, and beheads him in one blow, but the Green Knight is not killed, picks up his severed head, and leaves. The story recounts Gawain's struggle to meet his obligation to the green knight, and his adventures along the way.

Robin Hood In The Greenwood

image at wikipedia.org

One of the Green Man's manifestations is as Robin Hood, the Lord of the Greenwood.

Here is the Robin Hood we all know as Robin of Loxley, who, with his Merry Men, robbed the rich to give to the poor, lived as an outlaw in the Greenwood, and was permanently at odds with the Sheriff of Nottingham. This was a story grafted on to the Green Man thread, and represents the struggles of the English Saxons during the early years following the Norman Conquest of England.

Robin Hood of The Green Woods is an older and more powerful mythical figure; pre Norman, possibly pre Roman, and definitely Pagan. He inhabited and embodied the spirit of the wildwood , and thus lived outside the law of man.

Greensleeves; an anonymous poem attributed to Henry V111

Alas, my love, you do me wrong,
To cast me off discourteously.
For I have loved you well and long,
Delighting in your company

Greensleeves was all my joy
Greensleeves was my delight,
Greensleeves was my heart of gold,
And who but my lady greensleeves.

My men were clothed all in green,
And they did ever wait on thee;
All this was gallant to be seen,
And yet thou wouldst not love me.

Greensleeves was all my joy
Greensleeves was my delight,
Greensleeves was my heart of gold,
And who but my lady greensleeves.

Ah, Greensleeves, now farewell, adieu,
To God I pray to prosper thee,
For I am still thy lover true,
Come once again and love me.

Greensleeves was all my joy
Greensleeves was my delight,
Greensleeves was my heart of gold,
And who but my lady greensleeves.

Elves Are Known As The Green Folk

This poem is from The Book of Fairy Poetry, published in 1920, and is one of several fairy poems written by Fiona Macleod. My mother taught me this poem when I was a child, and there is a hill in Somerset that I cannot pass without this poem coming to mind.

How beautiful they are,
The lordly ones
Who dwell in the hills,
In the hollow hills.

They have faces like flowers
And their breath is wind
That blows over grass
Filled with dewy clover.

Their limbs are more white
Than shafts of moonshine:
They are more fleet
Than the March wind.

They laugh and are glad
And are terrible:
When their lances shake
Every green reed quivers.

How beautiful they are,
How beautiful,
The lordly ones
In the hollow hills.

I would go back
To the Country of the Young,
And see again
The lances of the Shee,

As they keep their hosting
With laughing cries
In pale places
Under the moon.

I Saw A Raindrop on a Leaf

A Green Miracle

O the green things growing, the green things growing,
The faint sweet smell of the green things growing!
I should like to live, whether I smile or grieve,
Just to watch the happy life of my green things growing.
