All Natural Rock Garden by Jack Ellsworth

Photo Gallery of Ellsworth Rock Garden created by J.E. Ellsworth from 1944 to 1965 on Kabetogama Lake, Minnesota in Voyageurs National Park is a historic grotto. A cool place! Jack was a Chicago building contractor who lived on the north shore of the lake during the warm season with his wife. The rock garden is Ellsworth's artistic expression for the fondness he had for the wilderness lake area, and is reported that he said he had logged over 14,000 hours creating it.

Ellsworth Rock Garden Information Sign

This sign is by the Kabetogama Walleye statue at the entrance to Kabetogama Lake.

It Reads: Visit a place like no other in the world. Accessible only by boat or over the ice. Ellsworth Rock Garden is a modern ruins reflecting effects of time and place on one man's artistic expression of design on the land.

Open your heart and mind, allowing your eyes to see simple, yet intriguing beauty. Here a human fell in love with a place, a place to call his own, but obviously meant to share with others. Land and water, ancient and wild, forming a landscape unique to Kabetogama Lake. This is the setting for Jack Ellsworth, a contractor and cabinet-maker from Chicago, who between 1944 and 1965 placed rock upon rock, his personal expression on this sixty-foot granite outcrop. The result of this labor of love is a thoughtful and thought-provoking collection of over 150 sculptures, plus walls, planters, buildings, and paths, dashes here and there with 62 flowerbeds.

As a child, we would go visit the rock gardens to see the flowers, Mr.and Mrs Ellsworth loved to have folks stop by. They kept the rock gardens filled with blooming flowers and it was a spectacular sight to see. It has been a long time since the Ellsworths have been alive. Voyageurs National Park Service still maintains the property and has added a public area for picnics and relaxing. The Ellsworth Rock Garden is a dramatic attraction for visitors to explore in wonder when they come to Kabetogama Lake, to the tune of approximately 100 visitors a day during the tourist season. Some of the floral remnants still remain. The grotto is accessible by boat in Voyageurs water park. Once you visit, this is a place that will call to your heart and you'll want to return again and again.

This is what I would call Ultimate Gardening!

You can see the entrance plaque that was built in dedication to Ellsworth's Garden and how well the grass is kept up by park rangers. It truly is a historic site to see.

Ellsworth gave lessons to interested people on how to build dry wall and for something to do he said. I think of it as passing on a heritage to generations to come. It's kind of like that saying that goes something like, "Give a man a fish and he eats for a day. Teach a man to fish and he eats for a life time".

This is a zen garden of peaceful artistic expression of love for the wilderness.

See the log cabin in the distance, with earth friendly art.

Ellsworth Rock Garden at Kabetogama Lake

A place where the streets have no names, there isn't even a road or nature trail to it.
Talk about living in the wilderness, or living in the sticks as some would call it!

This is amazing! I can almost smell the air and hear the birds sing! This is a "feel good" place to visit and many people linger and make a day of the oasis to refresh their inner being. The Ellsworths must have been totally at rest here, even when they were busy creating.

The piece of granite used for the sign was most likely split with dynamite. Dynamite was easy attainable. I remember that my Dad always had some dynamite, caps and fuses stored in the garage. There were times that he needed it for work projects.

You can see here that Ellsworth did use heavy black plastic to stop the weeds from over taking his beautiful garden. The dirt has been blown away by the winds and washed away by the rains. The animals remain in this place of nature.

Mr. Ellsworth carried buckets of water from the lake to water his gardens.

Few gardens can transport visitors to wild and rugged landscapes as well as rock gardens. Eye-catching rock gardens are among the most challenging - and satisfying - expressions of the gardener's craft. A true rock garden is a specialized habitat that allows the gardener to grow plants that do not flourish anywhere else. This book offers the first comprehensive treatment of building rock gardens in all parts of North America. Topics covered include rock placement, materials, and planting and maintenance. Variations on the rock garden theme, from planting troughs to creating water features are also discussed. The book presents regional styles and techniques and profiles a dozen public rock gardens from Oregon to Newfoundland. More than 100 inspiring photos accompany the lively text.

Always Wondered How He Made This Cool Place

The structure is very sturdy because the rocks naturally formed together.

Rock garden designs are an art form in designing and creating plans for layout and planting of gardens and landscapes. Ellsworth's garden design was made by a professional with experience and knowledge of design and horticulture using plants. He became a professional garden designer and landscape architect, and gained a high level of experience from his hours work.

Ellsworth took a more natural form of sculpting things together. Remember he was a building contractor - and an artist.

Mr. and Mrs. Ellsworth had a wild albino skunk running around tame that they feed. Mr. Ellsworth told our Dad that the skunk had never been denatured of its wild scent glands, and that it never sprayed around there. They would feed the wild animals treats by hand even and they all lived together in harmony...with nature.

Can you imagine the garden when it was full of colorful flowers? Oh, it was so beautiful to see, even from the lake in a boat. We would stop by when the flowers were in full bloom. It was remarkable! Ellsworth used water from the lake to water the plants when it hadn't rained.

A Wild Deer That Was Tame - A Friend

There you can see Ellsworths' one room log cabin they built. They had a water pump in the cabin, no electric power and an out house.

Deer are gentle animals and can become quiet tame when they know that they are safe. In fact most animals can become pretty friendly when they know they are safe. One must remember that they are wild animals though and can be unpredictable especially during their mating season.

A beautiful shade spot

Personally, I'm more of a shade person when its hot out.

Ellsworth even provided those nice little rock garden areas in the shaded places. I'm more of a shade person myself than a blazing sun person. There's something here for everyone to enjoy, even if you don't climb rocks.

The setting sun and a safe sheltered cabin in the wilderness. Now that's living in the wilderness at Kabetogama Lake. It must have been like a dream come true for the Ellsworths, because that is what it feels like to me.

The View from near the House!

I would love to watch as the rain water runs down the rocks.

When I was little I use to think that it looked so far to walk over to the garden from the house or the shore. Getting there was always well worth it and I could have stayed longer just walking around up on the garden and enjoying the tranquility.

These Rocks Still Belong To: Ellsworth

A fountain in the rain...where water pools and cascades down...

I would love to be in this spot during a good rain fall, just to watch the water run and fall from the rocks. It has to be real pretty to see. Kabetogama means "rough waters", so most people aren't out on the lake when there is a storm, unless they have good reason.

Our family just pontooned over to the rock gardens for a wonderful afternoon and picnic there! This man's work is just so worth going to see. Your pictures will be enjoyed often, in fact, this is how we heard about it. We also hit Kabetogama at the right time to enjoy both the Lady Slipper doings at the hall and the bazaar at the Methodist church. We will be back! The weather was just so beautiful though we all had to get sweatshirts for the chilly evenings around the campfire and we were not quite prepared for the mosquitoes at night, the campfire sure repelled them! Thank you for this! You are so lucky to have grown up in this beautiful place!
