How to Get Along with Your Ex

1. The first step to getting along with your ex is to be civil. Stay positive and keep your negative comments to a minimum. If you are going to say something negative, reframe it so that it becomes a positive statement.

2. Be cooperative, especially if children are involved. Work together and make decisions that are in the best interest of the children.

3. Stay calm and don't raise your voice regardless of what he/she says. Resist responding with something that you'll regret later.

4. Be clear. Say what you mean but say it carefully and without raising your voice or being aggressive.

5. Avoid starting your sentences with "you", "you never", and "you always. Start your sentences with "I" instead. This will help to avoid sounding aggressive and as if you are accusing her of things.

6. Don't talk to your ex about things that trigger negative emotions.

7. Remember the reason why you are apart and don't fall into the same traps.

8. Don't argue about things that have nothing to do with the kids or about things relating to your past relationship/marriage. Keep the topics on the kids.
