Excel is one of the most widely used programs in today's business environment. From public to private industries, as we rely more and more on data in our jobs we need to use program that let us organize, track and analyze this data. This is why many companies nowadays require their employees to be at least somewhat familiar with Microsoft Excel and other MS Office products.

You might not use Excel at your current job, but chances are that it will soon become a tool you are expected to be familiar with. Furthermore, if you end up looking for a new job, you may not even make it past the interview stage without some basic Excel skills.

Analyze month-end bank or credit card statements and see what areas you spend most on and where you can save money, you can even create charts for the year showing outlier months graphically

Use on of the many free home mortgage calculators to be on top of your mortgage payments during the buying process

Build a simple Excel scheduler or use one of the templates available through the Microsoft homepage. Keep track of important dates and items on your to-do-list and even upload your final product to Google Docs or Drobox so it's available at your finger tips

There are of course many more uses for Excel, but these were some of the more popular ones.

There are numerious books and ebooks on the internet written about how to learn Excel, but my personal opinion is to try out one of the many online tutorials. Make sure to pick one with lots of screen shots and possibly even videos as those tend to be more user friendly and make learning easier that plain text. Ideally you already own the program and can start working in Excel parallel to the online tutorial as this is the best way to learn new software.

For one-off questions and problems I recommend simply googling the problem. Many forums such as Mr. Excel are dedicated to Excel help so you should always be able to find your answers.
