Excerpt from their lives in the Sixteenth Century

TEUCH IS BORN AS A FEMALE -- ANN; ANACAONA IS BORN AS ANN'S SEVERELY CRIPPLED, BUT HIGHLY GIFTED SON, NATHANIEL

As Teuch and Anacaona evolve and develop further into the story of "The Meadow", this excerpt covers the lives of our two protagonists as they incarnate into the Sixteenth Century in New England.

Accompanying the Pilgrim Fathers, Ann and her husband along with their young son, Nathaniel, start a new life having left the drudgery that encompassed Ann's life.

Her husband Henry, was a Methodist Minister and the realities between the two of them were more polarised than they had first imagined. It was Nathaniel who would become the link pin, holding things together in more ways than one.

The authors challenge the reader not to be emotionally influenced by this very powerful story. Read the excerpt further down this page.

The Feathers

An novel waiting for publication

This is how the story begins, with a legend, where two tail feathers are cast from an eagle and an owl in an aerial display.

Excerpt from their lives in the Sixteenth Century

Teuch is born as a female - Ann; and Anacaona is born as Ann's severely crippled, but highly gifted son, Nathaniel.

. . . . "When she came to and looked at her surroundings Ann knew this night would be endless and that only death could cut it short. She and Nathaniel had no chance. For Sakhota the struggle was already over and she closed her eyes to the sight of his decapitated head grotesquely planted on his lance propped in the ground between her and Nathaniel where they waited under the tree with the ropes around their necks, feet still touching the ground. Ann had not said a word to Nathaniel and he too was very quiet. He kept his head at an angle at which he could see his mother at all times and Ann had a strange sensation that he had accepted their fate and was at peace with himself. In their eerie surroundings, with the full moon high in the velvet sky, a witness to the execution about to take place, Ann had an unfathomable realization of strange familiarity.

Then Nathaniel spoke for the first time in a subdued voice so as not to attract the attention of their five executioners a little distance away from them, contemplating a seemingly important matter. "I have always loved you." He said it simply, but his voice trembled with pent-up emotion. "Always." He repeated the word softly, keeping his eyes on her as if he wanted her to understand something. Ann looked into her crippled son's face and saw something that silenced her words but her body understood, for it translated her intense emotion into uncontrollable trembling.

Seeing her distress and knowing that their time together was short, he gestured with his eyes towards Sakhota's head between them. "Look down, please," he implored softly. "One of them took that off me when they surprised us. William stuck it in the ground under Sakhota's head. I know you will understand when you see it. Don't look at his head; look at the ground beneath%u2026"

Ann could barely breathe as she listened to his calm voice and slowly cast her eyes to the ground underneath the head with its open staring eyes, still dripping occasional sticky drops of blood. When she saw the feathers, she frowned as her heart contracted agonizingly, stopping for a painful moment to weigh the magnitude of what she saw, as if waiting for a decision to live or to die. "Oh, God%u2026 No!"

She spoke the words weakly, her face twisted in pain, then a tortured sob escaped her constricted lungs and every muscle in her body locked painfully. As the tears began to stream down her face, the veil of the past fell back and before her stood, not her crippled son, but a beautiful young woman with long black hair blowing gently in the wind. "Anacaona%u2026?" The name spilled, barely audible, from her lips as Ann's tortured heart faltered once more but she held on with every ounce of her strength, fighting back through the tears to bring Nathaniel's face into focus again.

"Teuch." Nathaniel whispered Ann's ancient name softly. He had known for so long, but couldn't bear to share this knowledge with her. As a cripple he had no real future with another woman and he had discovered their past through techniques that Sakhota had taught him. Since his discovery, he could live in his fantasies of times gone by, but she belonged to another man in this life and he needed and wanted to respect that.

Shape #5 small high res.

Nathaniel had gained deeper insight into the patterns and the sounds he always saw in his visions and dreams, and he intuitively knew that their story was not yet complete. His heart reached out to Ann, feeling the raw agony so deeply etched in bewildered confusion on her face. With the ropes around their necks there was no time to explain his visions to her or how a single shape, in its coded message, had recently revealed aspects of the mission they shared. All he could do for her right now, as Nathaniel, was to surround her with his love . . . "

The Pilgrim Fathers

The day when Ann, Henry and Nathaniel set out to seek a new life

The evolution of Anacaona and Teuch is documented in "The Meadow", illustrating and emphasizing the polarities which were thrust upon them.

Before they incarnated into the modern world, the history behind them was colourful as they shared many lives in different parts of the world and as many different people.

It was the soul which remained constant, only changing by the evolution which encompassed it. As they reincarnated, they also grew in mind, body and spirit.

There is no life that they shared which was never far away from great love. Conversely, there was also pain in great measure and was never demonstrated more effectively than when they existed during the sixteenth century, when they accompanied the Pilgrim Fathers and sailed with them to start life again by living in New England.

When you read this chapter you will feel the love and the pain in equal measure, leaving you breathless as you have probably just experienced by reading the above excerpt.

Dead Man's Hollow

A short story written in the first person singular

I've mentioned quite a few times, especially in the recent blogs that I've written, how "The Meadow" was an idea which came to me as a very young man. To this day I still can't say, hand on heart, what the source of it was.

Quite a while ago I wrote a short story called "Dead Man's Hollow". It was written in the first person singular and was inspired by my visits to a place in the countryside near where I live.

There was a small wooded hill and it was hollowed out on one side. It attracted kids of all ages and from all areas and we would play there for hours on end.

I can't confirm this one way or the other, but the experience of those heady days could well have planted the first seed of an idea which finally became "The Meadow" written along with my co-author Elfreda Pretorius.

All I can say is that whenever the idea for this story came into my consciousness, the vision of that hollow, named Dead Man's Hollow by the local population, was always present.

Watch out for my personal avatar

The Phoenix rising from the ashes combined with an outline of a female's head

In 1986 I was under a great deal of stress.

My mother was dying of cancer and I was undergoing horrendous business relationships with my equal partner.

My mother died, coinciding with my decision to go it alone and break the partnership and form a new business.

I commemorated this by designing this emblem/logo in memory of my late mother and in recognition of a new start in business.

It has remained with me ever since and has accompanied many articles that I have written, as well as being the company logo that accompanied all business administration.

A little girl picking up a baby sparrow

"Sparrow in my hand" is the personal Avatar of my writing partner, Elfreda.

Drawn by her son, it commemorates a turning point in her life when that same son, at the age of seven, overcame life threatening injuries sustained in an accident.

This is his vision of his mother as a little girl, wondering how to save a baby sparrow that fell from its nest - the same way she wondered how to help him survive all those years ago.

"Sparrow in my hand" is the book of his healing they intend to write in the near future.
