    Great lens! My favorite excuses are those that somehow involve a cat. I especially like the one about the cat hiding the alarm clock.
  • kitty222 May 30, 2012 @ 10:33 pm | delete
    Well, you see, I forgot the appropriate answer to the question, "Are you a turtle?" So I had to buy drinks for everybody and things just went downhill from there. LOL.

    I'm a punctual miss goody two-shoes who hates to be late and shows up for work every day. But, there was ONE time when I did have to call in. I was in a car crash on the way to work and couldn't make it because I hit a telephone pole and totaled the car (true story). Wonderful lens--gave me my laugh for the day! :)

    I love the pictures! I used to have to check the call-in line when I worked for a large call center. Some of the messages were hilarious and it was always great when you could tell they were trying to change their voice to sound sick or they would say they were sick and you could the background noise of them being out somewhere.

    Know this, O worthy and diligent lensmaster;
    With accomplishment you’ve earned a tryster.
    As a token of immense appreciation expressed,
    A squid angel leaves this lens heartily blessed.
    On a rendering that is sparkling in its own right,
    Propagating an appealing thought well and quite;
    If you were to notice a slender shimmering crust;
    From the angel’s wand, it is a spill of stardust.

    The day we got married, my husband didn't ask for the day off and he didn't call in sick. For some reason, 2 of his coworkers were no show/no call too. The next day when his boss asked them why they never showed up, John wouldn't tell him.
    So a couple months later we were all talking and Johns boss started joking about the day everyone didn't show up for work. He was shocked when I told him Johns reason. Apparently he thought all the guys had gotten together and goofed off somewhere. lol

    This story is from thirty years ago but still puts a smile on my face. One Monday morning in January I was awakened by a call from my boss.

    He said, "are you coming to work today?"

    I answered, "No, because of the holiday."

    "What holiday?"

    "It's Presidents Day."

    "Oh, What are you president of?"

    "Ah, nothing."

    "Then you don't have the day off!"

  • alaskabound Dec 16, 2011 @ 1:21 pm | delete
    I live in Alaska.... So I've had to call in with the following: "Yeah, uh, there's a black bear on my porch and I think the cub is nearby, I'm going to be late this morning...", "I got the cutest momma and baby moose eating my apple tree outside! I'll bring pictures from my window, but I'm not leaving until it's down the street a bit." "Hi, uh, I'm waiting on a plow truck because someone thought it would be funny to block my car in with a giant pile of snow while I was sleeping." "Sorry, my external outlet wasn't working last night and now my car is totally froze, already called the electrician they are on their way." ...Supervisors totally okay with these... I rarely miss work so the occasional "oops something happened, I'll be late but work extra" is ok. Course these were all backed up by pictures and in the case of the electric company fixing the outlet, receipts. :)

    This was too funny. We actually discuss the perfect way to call out at work also. Try to limit the detail in the excuse and make the call as quick as possible.
  • ShoeCleaner Nov 18, 2011 @ 7:25 pm | delete
    The best excuse I used was "The dog stole my glasses", but it was the honest truth. The new puppy took them and we spent hours looking for them.

    Very funny lens and for many occupations, the occasional day off is beneficial (whether you are sick or not).

    The thing is, we now have a problem (in healthcare, especially) of 'presentee-ism.' Hospital departments are so short-staffed that you are punished for calling in sick. This puts patients and healthy staff at risk for becoming ill. I have worked with a mask over my face when ill, since the entire team counted on me to come in. If I am so sick that I cannot come in, I'd hope co-workers and others would understand. Sometimes, however, people are not so understanding . . you have to look after yourself first, otherwise your work (and others) may suffer.

    I was volunteering at a health clinic a couple of years ago and two college students gave a talk in the waiting room about how people should not go to work for at least a few days if they had any mild flu symptoms because they might have swine flu. They were giving the talk to very low-income immigrants, mostly undocumented. Although protecting yourself is of course important, most of the people in that room did not have jobs that would let them call out without losing their job, and getting a job for an undocumented immigrant is getting harder and harder (regardless of your opinions on that issue, it's just a practical matter in terms of calling out). I worked in employment for 2 years and I can say that, at least for low-wage jobs, you've got to be very careful about call-outs, especially during initial probation. Or if you're a hotel housekeeper and you keep calling out on Sunday lol...see ya!

    These don't work for self-employed folks- hard to lie to one's self -:) When I worked routinely outside the home, I'd go to work and describe to everyone how my guts were churning and I wasn't sure if I'd have time to make it to the bathroom or not, but I came anyway since work was so important. Then I'd start coughing, make the odd gagging sound, squeeze my legs and say, no, really, it's the bottom end having the trouble, honest, I won't barf on you. I'd get asked to go home, and usually could milk it for at least another day. (Just kidding, made all that up on the spot, my dog made me do it -:)

    Yes, this is a fun lens. I once vacationed in Mexico for two weeks, and the day I was to go back to work, woke up quesy, to say the least. I called in, and my employer told me to go to the hospital and get a slip. The Doctors agreed I was suffering and gave me a shot of penicillin. Work was only a block away, so I went there with my Doctors note and learned I was allergic to penicillin by promptly going into anaphalactic shock in my workplace. I was hauled out in an ambulance. They never questioned me calling in sick again.

    Usually, I just send e-mail and say I do not feel well. But I have never made lame excuses.
  • Margo_Arrowsmith Oct 24, 2010 @ 3:04 pm | delete
    I don't get paid if I am not there, so the excuses dry up.

    excuse me!!! don't throw yourself a pity party because you can't skip work 24/7 like some people are have trouble keeping off the streets! think of the people in africa!!!! now maybe you can think about how great your life is.

    Even if you are actually too sick to work, I doubt if people can get away with calling in sick in this economy. At my last long-term job, I called in to say I'd be late because , when I went to get into my car, I found it had been stolen. I was not absent, just late. About a month and a half later, I slipped on the ice and broke my thumb and wrist and got a concussion. I went in to work before seeking medical help. When my symptoms became too alarming too finish the day, I called in a replacement and went to the ER. I had to take a few days off afterward due to the severity of the concussion symptoms. When I got back to work, I had a meeting with the owner and my supervisor where I was chewed out for being undependable. Despite my police report and doctor's slips, I was subtly accused of lying. The owner said, "No one would steal your car, it's a piece of $^%&!"

    So I think that no matter how sick or injured you are or if your car has actually been stolen or not, most employers will think about firing you even if you have a doctor's slip, a police report, and witnesses.

    Personally, if I was treated that way by an employer " no matter how much money I was making" I would Tell them in the words of Johnny Paycheck " You Can Take This Job and Shove It, I couldn't look myself in the mirror and take that kind of abuse, That's why I have my own small businesses, and make money many other ways without a boss to worry bout.

    This is fun and hilarious! I think we all could ask for a personal day now and then and bypass any need to be sick. Wouldn't it be fun to have a great time on an unplanned day off a couple of times a year?

    I had an insight as I read this lens--that excuses are weakening and need to be entirely dispensed with! I enjoyed reading!

    That picture of the dog curled up in the man's pants while he's on the potty is SO funny! I have a few tears streaming down my cheeks. Maybe it just caught me during a vulnerable moment, but thanks for the laugh! Oh ... but I work for myself, so my boss would never buy any of my excuses for calling in sick. So I just come clean and tell her I don't feel like working today.

    Now I'm kind of disappointed that I've never heard one of these out of you! You just keep showing up for everything! :)
  • ExcuseGal Aug 9, 2010 @ 12:05 am | delete
    Some of my best excuses involving animals are:

    "There’s a squirrel trapped in my basement and I want to get him outside before I leave."

    "My mom was stung by a bee this morning and her leg is swollen so much that she can’t even move it to walk. The doctor told me I need to take care of her all day today."

    "I found a lost dog in my neighborhood this morning. She doesn’t have a collar so I’m taking her in to PetSmart to see if she has an id chip implanted on her. "

    Best of all, I have TONS more excuses on my Good Excuse Blog. But, don't go there because if you do you might end up calling out of work for 2 weeks straight and then you'll get fired! If you're not worried about losing your job, check out http://www.agoodexcuse.org for more info.

    Hilarious! Some sound like the adult version of the "dog ate my homework" -- maybe we start inventing excuses very early in life, huh?

    A recently wed young man came to me when I was a shop foreman and said he need to take a few days off. His new wife was going to have a baby!

    "By all means!", I patted him on the back.

    After a few days, the young man returned to work and I approached him, "Well? Is it a boy or a girl?"

    "Huh?"

    "Your baby?!?!?"

    "Oh! We won't know for another nine months."

    I take my days. Calling in sick the morning off doesn't work well when you have classes of students waiting for you. Its easier to plan ahead. We call them 'Mental Health Days.' They usually involve a fictitious doctor's appointment.

    I was backing out of my garage and accidentally ran over my cat. (I didn't use this to call in sick, but I DID have to use it when I had a job interview because it was the real reason I couldn't make it. Fortunately, the cat was fine, but it took me about an hour to find where she was hiding. :-)
