Building Our Future

Women in leadership in organizations of all shapes and sizes need a place to gather, exchange ideas, find information and tools, and improve their leadership practice. That's what this lens is all about. Whether you're in a Fortune 500, a start-up or out there on your own, whether you're on your way up, already there and looking for fresh ideas, or looking for a place to pass your wisdom along to others, this is the place to find what you need. What works for you? What do you want to know? Just chime in.

What's Your Vision?

If You Don't Know Where You're Going, You're Liable to End Up Somewhere Else

Your vision statement - personal or business - should describe what you ultimately envision your greater purpose to be, in terms of growth, values, contributions to society, etc. Self-reflection is a vital activity if you want to develop a meaningful vision. Once you have defined your vision, you can begin to develop strategies for moving toward that vision. Part of this includes the development of a mission statement. The best vision is no more than two sentences long.

What do you want your business to be all about? What do you want for the rest of your life? Take a few minutes to write down your personal vision. This will be based on your goals and values. For example:
My vision is to head a foundation for women who need help getting beyond childhood abuse and neglect.

Mission Statement
Vision statements and mission statements are very different. Your mission statement is the vision translated into written form. It is a concrete expression of how you will bring your vision to life. A mission statement should be a short and concise statement of goals and priorities. customers who purchase products and/or services from the business.

Your mission statement should be a concise statement of strategy and it should fit with your vision. The mission should answer three questions:

1. What will I do?
2. How will I do it?
3. For whom will I do it?

What will I do? This question should be answered in terms of what is the real and/or psychological needs that you want to fulfill.

How will I do it? This question captures the more technical elements.

For whom will I do it? The answer to this question is also vital, as it will help you focus your efforts.

Clear Communication?

A few random quotes

I was searching for a Nixon-era quote that goes something like this: "I know you think you understand what you thought I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant!"

What I found appears to be a more recent version - I can't find the original anywhere - but I did find some food for thought about clear communication:

We cannot learn from one another until we stop shouting at one another - until we speak quietly enough so that our words can be heard as well as our voices. Richard Nixon

We think we understand each other, but we never really do.
- Luigi Pirandello,
Six Characters in Search of an Author

Women have the understanding of the heart, which is better than that of the head.
- Samuel Rogers

Where misunderstanding serves others as an advantage, one is helpless to make oneself understood.
- Lionel Trilling

How clear is your comunication?
