I am not a personal trainer nor am I a nutritionist. I'm a working mom with a penchant for nosing out information and resources online - especially free resources - and I've spent a fair amount of time at the gym, in the pool, or on a treadmill. I've read a ton of books on exercise. I've used a personal trainer. I've tried all the fad methods of getting in shape. You know what I've found works best? Hard work, dedication, and an exercise routine that keeps you motivated. I learned that from the personal trainer and darned if he wasn't right.
My goal is to help you find a routine that will get you eager to jump into those gym clothes on a regular basis.

Exercise Routines
What exactly is an exercise routine?
A routine is anything you do with regular frequency. In terms of exercise, a routine is a plan you follow weekly to achieve your fitness goals or to maintain your overall health.
The Centers for Disease Control provides guidelines for recommended adult physical activity as follows:
- 150 minutes a week of moderate-intensity aerobic activity, such as walking fast, aerobic water exercises, or riding a bike
PLUS
- Two sessions a week of muscle-strengthening activities like weight lifting, yoga, or using exercise bands
Seems easier to get started if one has a target - something to strive towards. Using these recommendations as a gauge, the next step would be to find the sorts of routines you can add to your daily plan that are both appealing to you and challenging at your current level of activity.
I've included routines for all fitness levels from beginners to advanced. Browse through the descriptions and play the videos that interest you the most.
Exercise Routines for Beginners
Low Impact
If you're just starting out with a regular exercise routine, you may want to try something low impact. This will be less stressful on your joints, especially your knees and ankles. You'll still get a great workout but there's nothing more stressful than starting up an exercise routine that's too difficult and becoming frustrated so early on.
Exercise routines for women who have been sedentary for awhile or have not had time to workout with some frequency are easy to come by. You don't have to go hog wild at the start, no matter how eager you are to get fit. Remember, simply adopting a routine at all is a huge goal in itself.
Home Exercise Routines for Women
When the gym isn't an option
I've had a gym membership for years - 9 years and 8 months to be exact. I got a great deal through my employer for $12 per month. However, it cost me another $30 a month to sign up my husband and cover the option for daycare for the kids when they were younger. I haven't been to the gym now in over 6 years and, yes, I'm still paying for that darn membership. I have the forms - FINALLY - to cancel the membership but they just don't make it all that easy.
Really, all I need is a set of weights and a treadmill and I'm good to go. Now that my kids are older, it's easier to exercise at home anyway.
The following exercise routines for women can be done at home and this first one focuses on how to use your own body weight for an exercise routine with no equipment.
Six Week Exercise Routines for Women
An entire program ready to go
To really get the most from an exercise routine, you need to change up the exercises to continuously challenge different muscle groups. Your muscles "remember" exercises so after awhile the same exercise routine isn't really giving you the same benefits it did when you started. Here's a six week program with lots of variety and you could easily perform these routines at home.

When you don't have a lot of time, or if you're trying to take your exercise routine to the next level, exercises that work multiple muscle groups at one time squeeze lots of work into shorter periods of time. You'll really feel this one all over!
Killer Total Body Exercise Routine
A complete workout with great targeting exercises
This is a really thorough workout with some really cool exercises. The trainer walks you through the entire program in a shortened version. You could easily follow along by pausing to do the entire set instead of the shortened set and get in the full workout.
This works your arms, legs, glutes, abs, and gets a little cardio in by being such a fast-paced routine. Great routine to have handy on your laptop and take with you on the road if you travel.
Arms Exercise Routine for Women
When you want nice, toned arms
It's a fact, many women want nice, toned arms - makes wearing tank tops and sleeveless dresses a whole lot more fun. Getting those arms, however, can take some additional concentration on your arm exercise routines. Here's a routine devoted to just arms.
Arm-Toning Exercise Routines for Women
In order to exercise the arms for great muscle tone, all a woman needs is a pair of five to eight-pound dumbbells. Work out the triceps, biceps, chest, backs of the arms and shoulders with help from a personal trainer in this free video on arm exercises for moms. Gym Workout Routines for Women
When you want to pump a little iron
Because I'm a bit of a nerd, I wrote down almost every single gym workout I did from January 17, 2001, through November 16, 2001. At least six months of those workouts were with the help of a personal trainer and without my little notebook, I would have been lost on my own. So I thought I'd post a few of those gym workouts below in case you find the mix of exercises is something you could use. Each workout listed below was one separate session at the gym and each exercise required 3 sets of 12-15 reps.

Adjustable Dumbbells
Space saving exercise equipment
Years ago, I started working out at home with a small set of hand weights. I think had a pair each of 2lbs, 5lbs, and 10lbs weights in those bright colors and soft, plastic-coated covers. They work really well, but as I got stronger, I needed more weights and I didn't really want a huge weight bench in the house. (I have one now - three boys in the house will do that to you.)
I moved up to a set of adjustable weights I purchased at Walmart for something like $30. It was a pair of weights adjustable in 2lb increments up to 24 lbs a piece. It had a metal pin that locked the right number of plates on to the dumbbell. The holes for the pin, however, didn't always line up right and having to adjust them between sets became a pain - especially when one of the dumbbell frames became bent. However, for $30, that set did its job for well over a year.
Then, I begged my husband for the Bowflex SelectTech set. It's pricey but a whole lot cheaper than those 6 years I paid for the gym membership I didn't use. Smart guy made it my Christmas present, which was fine by me. I love it. The dials are smooth even after all the use they get. I can dial up to 50 lbs per dumbbell, giving me a lot more flexibility to use the set for presses and squats. The 2009 model is out now.
Exercise DVDs for Women
Crunch
By far, my favorite workout DVDs are the ones put out by Crunch, the gym and fitness center that launched out of NYC. They're well known for making workouts fun and entertaining. The music is always motivating. I have had the Crunch Dance Party DVD for years. Whenever I hit a plateau and can't seem to break past it, or if I've "mysteriously" gained a few pounds (I know, who am I kidding? I know exactly where they came from), I add in a session or two a week of Dance Party and it seems to do the trick.
