Introduction to Exotic Marine Fish

One of the main reasons that most people own fish is that they are very beautiful to look at and come in a wide variety of colors, shapes and sizes. Having very exotic tropical fish can add to that enjoyment as sometimes the more exotic a fish variety is, the more unusual its color will be; some are even bred by private owners for unusual coloring and markings. But before you run out and buy the most expensive exotic tropical fish you can afford and that you can legally find, there are some words of warning you might want to consider first.

Exotic Marine Fish Are Fussy At Times

One is that often exotic marine fish are the most finicky about their environment. Most tropical fish can withstand water that fluctuates in pH levels, chemical balance, bacteria and algae amount, and so on, whereas very exotic marine fish may need everything to stay within certain levels. Adjusting your tank's pH and being mindful of algae buildup or an imbalance of bacteria is of course important no matter what fish you own but when fish are very finicky and particular this might mean constant readings, adjustments, and so on. Most fish owners test their tank's chemicals about once per week or every other week whereas those with very exotic marine fish may find they need to test every other day at the most. This can wind up being quite the tedious task! Making all those adjustments can also add up when it comes to the chemicals you need to add to keep everything in balance, so be prepared for this extra work involved.

Most fish eat flake food or food pellets and are completely fine whereas the more exotic marine fish may want live food or are more particular about their feed. Live fish food is often freeze dried or frozen and while it's somewhat affordable it is more expensive than flakes or pellets. This expense too needs to be considered when thinking of getting exotic marine fish for your home tank.

Life Span

And keep in mind one last thing, that is, the life spans of these exotic marine fish. Some fish live for a few years, some up to ten years, but most have a life span of only a few years at best. If you're spending quite a bit of money for the most exotic marine fish you can find, of course no one can tell you what to do with your money but consider how long this fish will live even under the best of circumstances. Are you willing to spend that money on a pet that will live only a few years? This is up to you to decide but remember that exotic marine fish are not like oil paintings or crystal; those art pieces last a lifetime whereas fish will eventually die.

Take these points into consideration when shopping for exotic marine fish. There's nothing to say that you shouldn't make the purchase but that you should just be aware of these things before you do.
