Exotic Orchids

These beautiful yellow orchids were given to us last year by our son. And this year they have two stems full of orchid buds. Orchids are a great flower to grow at home. The flowers usually last two weeks or more. Some of these exotic beauties even have fragrance. We have orchid growing advice, orchid pictures, and orchid theme gifts like t-shirts, mugs, large canvas tote bags, and more.

Grow Your Own Exotic Orchids

We raised these orchids ourselves. We bought the wood arbor on which they hang from a local nursery. It was on their showroom floor and the last in stock. The nursery took it apart and my husband reassembled it in our patio. He added the screen on top to protect the orchid plants from the ever present Florida sun.

Orchids Currently Growing

The gold and red orchid just started blooming. All four flowers are all from one bud. As you can see the dendrobium Dancing Ladies and the white orchids are still blooming.

Our Darth Vader orchids that we have had for 5 years.

Beautiful fragile white nameless orchid.

We bought this beautiful orchid bare root from a nursery last year. Bare root means no flowers or pot. It did have a name tag, but, we lost it.

Years ago I was an orchid club member and remember two basic things. First, never buy or keep an orchid unless you know the full name of the species and variety. Because unless you know that the orchid can never be entered in an orchid show.

And second, make sure the orchid roots turn green when watering them. Orchid roots start out white and do not absorb water until they have been watered enough to turn green.

Dendrobium 'Dancing Lady' Orchids

We have grown these delightful small orchids for about 10 years. They just keep multiplying and we split the roots apart and re-pot. Many plants have been given away through the years. There is no fragrance with these flowers.

Red Catelya Orichid name unknown.

We bought this beautiful red orchid in full bloom last year at a nursery. This year the buds took about 3 months to open. It has a very strong fragrance, somewhat like cinnamon. This is my favorite orchid.

When I moved to Denmark, almost two years ago, I noticed that every window had at least one orchid, so I bought one for my window too. Later, a friend of mine brought me a "moribund" orchid, begging me to try to do something to save it. Now they both grow and bloom in my window..... and every time they bloom it seems like a miracle to me, they´re such graceful flowers!!!!

I didn't realize orchids require special soil. Interesting and good to know if I ever get myself orchids. I have been thinking about it.
